Co-Curricular at MAG

Rowing Camp

On Monday 6 and Tuesday 7 October, three crews of students travelled to Bendigo for a rowing camp marking the start of the 2025–2026 season. Over two intensive days, students took part in a range of drills and technical sessions led by the MAG coaching team, preparing them to soon take on the Murray River and, eventually, competitive racing.

By Tuesday afternoon, all rowers had shown tremendous progress and promise on the water. Their resilience and teamwork were commendable—especially in the face of sore muscles, blisters, and some unseasonably cold winds.

A particular highlight was the senior girls’ 1st Quad (4x), who graduated into their racing boat on Monday. After some initial wobbles, they settled in beautifully and are now training hard for next weekend’s regatta in Bendigo on Lake Weeroona. This event will be especially significant as it marks Moama Anglican Grammar’s first-ever rowing competition.

We wish our girls’ 1st Quad every success in their upcoming races and for the season ahead.

Secondary Students Compete at the Combined Independent Schools NSW State Championships

Thirteen students travelled to Sydney for the Combined Independent Schools NSW State Championships on 23 September. The competition was held at Sydney Olympic Park, the venue that was the warm-up track for the Sydney Olympic Games.

The team dinner the night before was well-attended and allowed families to meet and athletes to refuel for the following day. It was a very busy championship for students, with a number of them competing in three or more events. The versatile Remi Baulch competed in nine events (best place 7th in long jump, triple jump and 200m) and Laura Stone competed in five events (best place 5th in 800m).

Two high jumping gold medals were the standouts of the championships, with both Phoenix Wise and Quinn Downward taking out the win in their respective 14-year event. Phoenix also placed second in shot put and third in long jump for a total of three medals from four events. Congratulations also to Michael Williams (18-19 years) on fourth in both the triple jump and shot put and fifth in long jump.

The Girls and Boys 14 and Under relay teams performed well (8th and 11th, respectively) and both improved their times from Region Championships in Albury.  The other athletes who competed and should be proud of their efforts to make the CIS State Championships were: Sophie Jardine (Year 9), Charlie Flanigan (Year 8), Ivy Walker (Year 8), Alex Attalh (Year 9), Jack Hawkins (Year 8), Lylah Newman (Year 7), Zara O'Donnell (Year 7), and Lexi Starritt (Year 9).

Outstanding Results for MAG Equestrian Team

The MAG Equestrian Team had some fantastic results at the recent St Arnaud Agricultural Show! A big congratulations to Zara O'Donnell (Year 7), who rode beautifully to take out 3rd place in the Open 90cm class and 4th place in the Open 1m 2 Phase from large fields. We are so proud of her hard work and dedication. Our jumping coach, Miss Briggs, was also in the ring, finishing 3rd in the 1.25m Championship class – what an exciting day of riding for team MAG!

A reminder that the MAG Equestrian Squad Program will continue for riders in Term 4 on Wednesday Blue weeks at Rochester Pony Club, beginning at 2:30 pm. Please contact Miss Briggs for further details.

Students who are interested in competing in the Interschools sections (showing and showjumping) at the upcoming Whittlesea Agricultural Show are encouraged to get in touch with Miss Briggs via email at equestrian@moamagrammar.nsw.edu.au.

Basketball Victoria U12 Jamboree

Congratulations to Sophie Frazer and Archie Flanigan, who recently took part in the Basketball Victoria Under-12 Jamboree held in Echuca from 20–23 September.

The event brought together 240 talented young basketballers from across Country Victoria for a weekend of high-level competition and skill development. Sophie and Archie had the chance to learn from experienced coaches and play alongside some of the best young athletes in the state.

This milestone marks the first step in Basketball Victoria’s High Performance pathway—a fantastic achievement for two of our Year 5 students.

Congratulations to Sophie and Archie.

MAG Students at the V/Line Cup

Congratulations to Finn Murphy (Year 9), Charlie Martin (Year 9), Chloe Ryan (Year 7) and Sophie Millar (Year 7) who were selected to compete in the V/Line Cup in Ballarat during the recent school holiday break.

The V/Line Cup is Victoria’s premier under-15 AFL championship, providing young athletes with a pathway into elite programs such as the Coates Talent League—and for some, a step towards a future in the AFL or AFLW.

Finn, Charlie, Chloe and Sophie all performed strongly across their games, with Sophie recognised as ‘Best on Ground’ in her final match.

A fantastic achievement and a great glimpse of what’s ahead for these talented young athletes.

Gold Nugget Camp

The Basketball Victoria Future Development Program (FDP) is designed for talented Under-14 Country athletes, helping them elevate their skills while learning from BV’s High Performance Coaching Team.

Over 20 weeks, Year 7 students Chloe Ryan, Pippa Leeds, Lexi Wright, Saige Milner and Kirrawai Day took part in the program, building their game and developing as athletes. From this, Chloe, Pippa, Saige and Kirrawai were selected to attend the prestigious Gold Nugget Camp in Ballarat over the school holidays, which is an incredible opportunity that recognises their dedication and potential.

Congratulations girls on this wonderful achievement!

Students Excel at National Gymnastics Carnival on the Gold Coast

Over the school holidays, four students represented our school community at the Gymnastics Australia National Clubs Carnival, held at Palmers Gym on the Gold Coast. Competing against some of the nation’s best, they demonstrated exceptional skill, dedication and teamwork.

🌟 Amaylia Coburn (Year 2)

Competing on the national stage for the first time in Level 4 Women’s Tumbling, Amaylia reached both finals from a large field of competitors and finished an impressive 5th overall — a remarkable effort for one of the youngest in her division.

🌟 Violet McGillivray (Year 8 ) and Leni Coburn (Year 7)

Both competed in the highly contested Level 5 Women’s Tumbling event, the largest field of the carnival. Leni placed 20th and Violet 24th, performing strongly among the best young gymnasts in Australia.

🌟 Addison Coburn (Year 4)

Addison advanced from the National Stream to the International competition for the first time, competing in the Under 13 International category on the rod floor. She made the finals and placed 8th overall, also qualifying for the State Team for the third consecutive year.

🌟 Leni Coburn (Aero Events)

Leni also competed in three Aerobic Gymnastics events, earning a gold medal with her team in Level 5 Multiples, and placing 8th in pairs and 15th individually.

Congratulations to Amaylia, Violet, Addison and Leni on these outstanding achievements. We are proud of their commitment and the way they represented our School community at both national and international levels.
