Secondary Athletic Carnival Article

The day began like any other, except of course, bright vibrant colours of red, yellow, green and blue stood out amongst the bland colours of the school environment. It was the day of the athletics carnival and everyone was feeling the spirit. As we waited for the bus, excitement grew. We knew that we were in for one super fun day!

As the bus came we all boarded it while teachers were doing a headcount. Each and every one of us had gotten a unique code (which was written on our hands) that could be used to make a score of our activity and performance. We roamed through the suburb for what felt like forever until we saw the glorious sight of the red running track. We all got off the bus and walked to sets of bleachers. Each house sat on their own set in rows, by class order. We were waiting for the morning announcements to commence. 

Everyone was determined to earn some house points as they would help to increase the total house score, most points win! People could earn house points for showing good sportsmanship or representing DCC values.

We started the day off with 100m sprint, 200m sprint, long jump, high jump, shot put, discus and a rest period for only 2 groups. Houses were split into age groups, there were 8 groups in total. Each activity lasted about 20 minutes and groups would switch between the activities. Students worked hard throughout the day in their individual events but made sure to save some energy for the team challenges to start the second half of our day. Houses completed in tug-a-war, house chant and relay races as a team.

The tug of war was a highlight for everyone, teachers and students worked together in their houses to demonstrate their strength. Almost everyone joined in on this event, it was incredible to see everyone included in the event.

After the exhausting day, the judges compiled all the points to see that Peris came first, followed by: Goolagong, Freeman and Riley. We all boarded the bus that day knowing we had a blast at the 2026 Athletic Carnival!
