Year 5 Term 3 Overview
Term 3 is a busy and exciting one in Year 5. Here is a short overview of what we will be focussing on.
Yr 5 Camp
Our Year 5 students had an incredible time at the YMCA Anglesea Discovery Camp. Over the three days, students embraced new challenges, demonstrated resilience and teamwork, and created lasting memories with their classmates. From exciting outdoor activities to sharing meals and spending time together, camp provided many opportunities for students to develop independence, build confidence and strengthen friendships. We are incredibly proud of the positive attitude, enthusiasm and respectful behaviour shown by all students throughout the camp.
English
Throughout Term 3 in English, our Year 5 students will explore how an author's purpose and intended audience influence the structure and features of texts. Through the study of information reports and procedures, students will investigate how authors use text features, visuals, topic-specific vocabulary, synonyms and clear, factual language to effectively communicate information and engage readers. Students will apply this understanding by planning, drafting, revising and publishing a range of information reports and procedural texts, developing their ability to organise ideas logically, select appropriate language and present information clearly for a specific audience and purpose.
Numeracy
In Maths during Term 3, Year 5 students will continue to strengthen their number knowledge through a weekly focus on the Big Idea of Fractional Thinking while developing skills across a range of mathematical concepts. Students will investigate factors, multiples and divisibility, apply efficient mental and written strategies to solve multiplication and division problems, and use estimation to check the reasonableness of their answers. They will build their understanding of fractions by ordering, representing, adding and subtracting fractions with related denominators, while making connections between fractions, decimals and common percentages. Students will also use mathematical modelling to solve real-world financial and practical problems and develop their spatial reasoning by using grid coordinates to locate and describe positions.
SEL
SEL in Term 3, Year 5 students will participate in the Sexuality Education program delivered by Sex Education Australia, which provides age-appropriate learning about human growth and development. As part of our Social and Emotional Learning program, students will also explore how the actions and expectations of peers and adults can influence gender norms, examine ways to challenge stereotypes, develop an understanding of respectful and equitable relationships, and learn strategies for seeking support if gender norms or stereotypes cause harm, exclusion or discomfort. To support students' physical, social and emotional wellbeing, they will also participate in Year 5 Sport, where they will prepare for Year 6 interschool sport while developing teamwork and movement skills through minor games, yoga and dance.
Inquiry
During Term 3, our Inquiry learning will have a Science focus as students investigate the properties of solids, liquids and gases and explore how the movement and arrangement of particles influence their observable properties. Students will classify and compare reversible and irreversible changes to materials through hands-on investigations, developing their scientific inquiry skills by posing questions, conducting fair tests, analysing evidence, identifying possible sources of error and suggesting improvements to investigations. Students will also apply their understanding through the Design Technologies process, exploring how the characteristics and properties of materials influence their use as they develop, communicate and refine design ideas using appropriate scientific and technical language.
