Welcome back for another eventful term! Term 3 is an exciting and engaging term, with many opportunities for students to connect their learning across different curriculum areas.

Term 3 Learning

In Literacy, students will strengthen the connection between reading and writing. Through Reading, they will explore a variety of text types while developing their comprehension skills and deepening their understanding of informative texts and science reports. Students will also investigate texts using the PASIA text analysis framework and build their vocabulary through word studies focusing on morphology, technical vocabulary and etymology (word origins). A strong emphasis will also be placed on developing essential research skills, including locating and evaluating information, paraphrasing, note-taking and synthesising ideas from multiple sources. These skills will support the creation of high-quality informative texts and are vital for success in secondary school. In Writing, students will apply these skills to create purposeful information texts and science reports that connect directly with their Inquiry learning. In Numeracy, students will begin the term exploring the Big Idea of Fractional Thinking, developing a deeper understanding of fractions, decimals and percentages and the connections between them. They will apply these concepts to solve increasingly complex, real-world problems before moving into Financial Mathematics, where they will investigate budgeting, discounts, profit and loss, interest, and making informed financial decisions. Later in the term, students will develop their spatial reasoning through Mapping, using coordinates, scale and direction to interpret and create maps. They will also explore Probability and Statistics, collecting, representing and analysing data, making predictions and drawing evidence-based conclusions. Daily warm-up activities will continue to strengthen number fluency, mental computation, problem-solving strategies and mathematical reasoning, helping students build confidence and consolidate their understanding across all areas of mathematics.

Our Inquiry focus this term is The Power of What We Can't See: Gravity and Planetary Motion. Students will build their understanding of a range of scientific concepts before planning, conducting and evaluating scientific investigations. They will communicate their findings through scientific reports, creating strong links between Inquiry and Literacy. During National Science Week (Week 6), students will participate in an exciting Inquiry Day (August 20, Thursday), immersing themselves in a variety of hands-on science experiments and challenges that further their learning.

In Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), students will explore themes of, empathy, respect and understanding, including developing positive relationships and appreciation for others. Throughout the term, students will also participate in transition lessons designed to support a confident and successful move into secondary school.

Beginning in Week 6, our Prep Buddy Program will commence. Year 6 students will work alongside Prep students, developing leadership, communication and mentoring skills while fostering positive relationships within our school community.
