TERM 3 OVERVIEWS VISUAL ART P - 6
PREP	In Term 3, Prep students are going to work on a Clay Sculpting unit, learning about shapes and forms through hands-on experiences with play dough, magic clay and clay. They will investigate how these materials differ and practice simple sculpting techniques. Students will be introduced to the work of a few artists to explore how shape and form can be used to create expressive faces. Their final artwork will be a Picasso-inspired face sculpture with the magic clay while developing their confidence in using materials and techniques.
GR 1	Grade 1 students will learn how everyday food can inspire art by exploring the work of Yayoi Kusama, Wayne Thiebaud and Claes Oldenburg. Students will learn about clay and practise hand-building techniques, using form, texture, colour and decorative details to create their own clay cupcake sculptures. Through this hands-on unit, students will develop their skills, creativity and confidence.
GR 2	In Term 3, Grade 2 students are going to work on the clay sculpting unit, where they will develop their understanding of three-dimensional art through hands-on exploration. Students will learn the difference between 2D shapes and 3D forms, investigate and practice the three hand-building techniques- pinching, coiling and slab-building and apply these skills to create a glazed ceramic artwork, lotus and lily pad clay sculpture. Throughout the unit, students will be introduced to a few ceramic artists and their artworks to explore how artists use form, texture and clay to communicate ideas.
GR 3	Students will experiment with a variety of watercolour techniques. They will learn how to combine techniques to create different effects. Students will create a sample of each technique and be encouraged to use these in a variety of watercolour paintings throughout the term. They will learn about colour theory and how to care for the equipment they use.
GR 4	In Term 3, Grade 4 students will explore the Textile unit, where they will develop hand-stitching skills while exploring creative ways to combine textiles with visual arts. Throughout the term, students will learn and practice three hand-stitches: running stitch, cross stitch and French Knot, while building confidence in using textile materials, tools and processes safely and effectively. Students will apply the Elements of Art and Design Principles to plan and create an abstract composition, which they will enhance using the learnt hand-stitching techniques, demonstrating creativity, craftmanship and personal expression.
GR 5	During Term 3 Grade 5 students will focus on the unit of work-clay modelling, while focusing on the art elements of form and shape. Students will learn the basic properties of clay and practice fundamental hand-building techniques. They will also explore the correct methods for joining and carving clay using additive and subtractive methods. The practical knowledge will support students to work towards their final clay product for the term, sculpting a patterned fish. This unit works with the Grade 5 classroom inquiry - Changing States of Matter.
GR 6	During Term 3 Grade 6 students will learn how to use clay in various ways incorporating the additive and subtractive techniques. Students will practice hand-building techniques to reacquaint themselves with techniques taught last year as well as using a variety of tools to embellish their work. They will design their own Coat of Arms incorporating aspects of their identity and personality. Once fired, students will have the opportunity to glaze their work, ready for display.
