Year 3

The past two weeks have been full of learning experiences and special events for our Year 3 cohort! The students reverently celebrated our faith during Whole School Mass and continued the celebrations during Whole School Assembly. This week the students learnt about the importance of National Sorry Day and celebrated our love of reading with the National Simultaneous Storytime.

Religion

In religion, students have continued exploring various parables and have been learning about how to navigate the bible. As this unit comes to a close, students have begun thinking about what they know and what they want to know about our upcoming unit on Prayer/The Mass. This week students were introduced to the parts of the Catholic Mass including the Introductory Rites, Liturgy of the Word, Liturgy of the Eucharist and Concluding Rites and correctly order the parts within them.

Literacy

The students have eagerly continued their study of the novel Matilda by Roald Dahl, being introduced to new characters such as Matilda’s friend Lavender and the formidable Miss Trunchbull. They have continued practicing their reading skills in their fluency pairs, working on providing constructive feedback to one another in order to improve skills such as fluency, sounding out and using expression. In writing, the students have been learning about various types of sentences including statements, questions, commands and exclamations. Additionally they have been exploring how to add additional detail to their writing by thinking about the who, what, when, where and why of their narratives.

Following our excursion to the Melbourne Museum, the students stepped back in time to learn about what life was like for Australia’s First Nations Peoples before the arrival of settlers from Europe. Students learnt about the day-to-day lives of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples as well as the meaning behind the various symbols used in Indigenous artworks. Following this, students began learning about Captain James Cook and the various journeys he undertook, including his landing in Botany Bay in 1770.

Year 4

Over the past few weeks, students have continued to show enthusiasm and curiosity across all learning areas. It has been wonderful to see the confidence and independence growing within the classroom.

Religion

In Religion, students have been learning about important prayers that are present in the Mass and discussing their meaning and significance within the Catholic faith. Year 4 students have also begun researching the four Gospels and learning about the work of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

Students explored themes of friendship, belonging and resilience while making connections to their own experiences. During Writing, students have been learning how to summarise texts by identifying key information and important ideas.
