Year 1/2 News

How have we already made it halfway through the term? It feels like only yesterday the learning spaces were buzzing with the excitement of a new start, yet here we are already at the midpoint. The weeks have flown by, filled with learning, achievements, activities, and memorable moments. As we reflect on everything accomplished so far, we also look forward to an exciting and productive second half of the term.
Inquiry:
Over the last couple of weeks students have been learning about Earth and space. They explored how Earth is one of the eight planets in our solar system and investigated patterns in the movement of the Sun, Moon, planets, and stars. Students also discussed ways we can care for our planet by reducing, reusing, and recycling. Through class activities and discussions, they explored the different actions people can take to help protect and care for the Earth.
Literacy:
Students have been actively engaged in a variety of literacy activities this term. They explored oral retells of stories, identified commands and exclamation marks, and practised sequencing events from familiar texts.
As part of National Simultaneous Storytime, students enjoyed listening to Luna Roo and participating in related classroom discussions and activities. Students also acknowledged National Sorry Day by reading the book Respect and reflecting on ways they can show respect for Elders, Country, water, and family.
To celebrate creativity and connection to the story Luna Roo, students designed and created their own jerseys inspired by the text. It has been wonderful to see students sharing thoughtful ideas and engaging enthusiastically in their learning.
Maths:
In Mathematics, students have been developing their understanding of measurement and number skills through a range of hands-on learning activities. They explored suitable informal units to measure length and practised measuring the lengths of objects and shapes using these units. Students also worked on estimating the length of objects before measuring to check their predictions.
In Number, students strengthened their understanding of place value and number bonds to ten to solve addition and subtraction problems within 100. They practised adding multiples of ten, as well as adding two-digit numbers by partitioning them into tens and ones without regrouping. Students also explored subtracting multiples of ten using place value strategies to build confidence and fluency with number operations.
Religion:
In Religious Education, students have been learning about the story of the Ascension of Jesus and exploring how the resurrection story connects to their own lives and the lives of others. Through discussions and shared activities, students reflected on the importance of relationships and identified the qualities that make a good relationship, such as kindness, respect, and care.
Students also listened and responded to stories about forgiveness, helping them to understand that Jesus always offers us forgiveness and encourages us to show forgiveness to others. It has been wonderful to see students thoughtfully engaging with these important values and making connections to their everyday lives.
