A Word from Justin

Term 2, Week 6 - Friday 29th May, 2026

Dear Families of OLSC,

And just like that, another fortnight has flown by.  We are already more than halfway through the term - hard to believe!

Year 5 - Camp Information Night

Next week, on Monday, 1st June at 7:00 pm we have an online meeting for all Year 5s who will be attending camp.  The Year 5 camp at YMCA Angelsea will take place on the 17th, 18th and 19th June.  Jodie will be sending a link through Dojo for all families to log in and join the meeting.  This meeting is to provide information to students and parents about the camp and discuss ways to relieve camp worries and anxieties.

There will be an opportunity for questions.  See you all online next Monday.

National Simultaneous Storytime 2026

National Simultaneous Storytime took place on Wednesday this week, and all students at OLSC participated in this exciting event!

Run by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA), this annual nationwide reading event—where the same Australian picture book is read in hundreds of locations at the exact same time—was first launched in 2000, 26 years ago! This year, students all around Australia simultaneously listened to the story 'Luna Roo the Kangaroo Baller', written by Adrian Lloyd and Adam Jackson, and illustrated by Jake Minton.

Luna Roo the Kangaroo Baller is an inspiring underdog story about Luna, the rookie captain of the FC Outback soccer team. As she leads her team against the tough Bush United, Luna must overcome nerves, unique obstacles such as a spider goalkeeper, and self-doubt to trust her skills and her teammates. The children discussed the story's themes, including courage, teamwork, and resilience.

Here at OLSC, students heard the story being read by the authors, saw how Jake Minton draws Luna Roo's character and had the chance to respond to the book in many creative ways.

MacKillop College Musical - Spongebob

This week our Year 5 students attended MacKillop College for the final full dress rehearsal of Spongebob - the Musical.  The students (and staff) returned to school with glowing reviews after enjoying the opportunity.  Our Year 5 staff team along with Zoya attended and it was very affirming that our students were complimented by MacKillop staff for their conduct and behaviour while at MacKillop.

I was fortunate to attend the grand opening last night and thoroughly enjoyed the performance. Congratulations to the cast, crew, staff and all who worked so hard to prepare and put the show together. Thanks to Chris Caldow for extending the inviation to both myself and the Year 5 team.

It was great to see so many past students of OLSC involved in the performance, both on stage and part of the back stage crew.  I hope I haven't left anyone out, well done to Liv Fox, Aratrika Karmakar, Sophie Chea-Lyne, Moana Ladjes, Zoe Lovelock, Ella Mayne, April Meyers, Isabelle Payne, Francesca Villafane, Grace Zammit, Luka Zammit, Bentley Burgess and James Giallo.  A very talented group of former OLSC students!

Winter is getting closer

Gallery Image

As winter approaches and the resultant colds and flu, please be extra vigilant in monitoring your child's health and avoid sending them to school when unwell.

To help keep our school community healthy and safe, we kindly ask that children stay home if they are feeling unwell or showing symptoms of illness.  Keeping sick

children at home helps reduce the spread of infections and protects other students, staff and families.  Children should only return to school once they are feeling well and no longer have symptoms or are no longer contagious.  We appreciate your support and cooperation in helping us maintain a safe and caring environment for everyone in our community.

Library / Discovery Centre - finally some progress

Over the last 2 weeks and since our last newsletter, we have made some progress on our new building.  Most of the framing is now complete and in the next week or two, the roof will be completed and the building will be wrapped.  Fingers and toes crossed for an early term 4 move in date!

Long Weekend and Closure Day

Next weekend there is a long weekend for the King's birthday (Monday, June 8th) and a school closure day on Tuesday 9th June.  The closure day is a time in lieu day for staff.  A dojo and text will be sent next Friday as a reminder for everyone.

Share your Child's Achievements

If anyone in your family has an achievement that could be shared in the newsletter and is worthy of celebration and acknowledgement, please email Justin to be included in the next newsletter.
