Literacy

National Sorry Day

On Tuesday, 26th May, the staff and students at OLSC reflected on the significant historical events that have had and continue to have a severe impact on our nation's First Peoples. All year levels shared picture books that encouraged students to think about being lost, showing respect, and the importance of saying sorry. Through these stories, the children were able to learn more about Indigenous Australians, the Stolen Generations, and the strength that they have shown in enduring such huge loss and mistreatment.

What have we been learning in our Literacy lessons at OLSC?

Prep - In LC3, the Prep students shared the story 'The Very Cranky Bear' by Nick Bland. They were able to identify the feelings felt by the different characters throughout the story and worked hard at retelling the story by drawing the beginning, middle and end of the rhyming narrative. Next week, they will read another book in the series called 'The Very Brave Bear'.

Year 1/2s - The 1/2 students have started reading books by author Jon Klassen. They began with 'I Want My Hat Back' and next week will continue by reading 'This is Not My Hat'  and 'We Found A Hat'. So far the students have found the story to be quite humorous and have enjoyed thinking about how illustrations give the reader more informtaion than when we just read the text.

Year 3s and Year 4s - This past fortnight, the students in Year 3 and Year 4 have continued reading 'Matilda' by Roald Dahl and 'The Wild Robot' by Peter Brown for their novel studies. Our Year 4 classes have just finished their book and are very much looking forward to watching the movie version about Roz the robot and making comparisons to the text.

Year 5s - The Year 5 students have continued their focus in Literacy to making links through texts to their Geography Inquiry topic. Following on from their work with 'Looking After Country With Fire' by Victor Steffenson, the Year 5s have been learning about the impact of bushfires in Australia through the book 'Fire' by Jackie French. Jackie uses personification and rhyme to illustrate how a fire moves and the destruction it causes. Students responded with creativity to show their learning through artworks inspired by the illustrator, Bruce Whatley.

Year 6s - The Year 6 students have continued their novel study of 'Once' by Morris Gleitzman, a novel that centres around a young Jewish boy named Felix who lives in Poland during the Holocaust. In writing, they have been constructing sentences using the skill of nominalisation where they convert verbs into nouns by adding suffixes to the end, for example; suggest becomes suggestion and amaze becomes amazement.
