Prep - 2 Community

March 2026

We’re pleased to share that our P–2 students have settled beautifully into the 2026 school year. Classrooms have been calm, happy and productive, and it’s been wonderful to see students building new friendships and positive relationships with their classmates and teachers.

We’re looking forward to a fantastic year filled with much growth, learning and personal success.

Starting Right

The first three weeks of the year focus on establishing strong routines and clear expectations to support learning and wellbeing. This year, we introduced our revised NBC Agreed Expectations for Growth, Collaboration, Kindness and Persistence.

Across our P–4 learning communities, students have also been exploring our ALWAYS expectations, helping everyone understand how we learn and work together respectfully every day.

Literacy

As of this year, all P–2 classes are now implementing the Phonics Plus program. This evidence-based approach provides daily, explicit phonics instruction. Students develop key early reading skills including phonemic awareness, spelling, handwriting and reading fluency, building strong foundations for literacy success. Further to this, P-2 students will also be engaging in rich-text learning experiences where they will focus on building content knowledge and explore language, reading comprehension and writing skills.

NumeracyIn 2026, daily Fact Fluency sessions will also soon be introduced across our P–2 classrooms. Fact fluency helps students quickly and confidently recall basic addition and subtraction facts (and later multiplication and division). Developing automatic recall supports students to tackle more complex problem-solving with confidence.

HASS (Health Focus)This term, our HASS learning is centred on the theme of Health, exploring the essential question: How do I keep myself and others safe?

Throughout the unit, students will participate in range of engaging incursions to support this learning, including:

  • Bravehearts – personal safety education
  • St John’s Storytime – keeping our bodies healthy
  • Mind & Body Incursion – supporting healthy minds and wellbeing

Student Report: Bravehearts Incursion (Year 1–2)

In Week 5, our Year 1–2 students participated in the Bravehearts: Ditto’s Keep Safe Adventure program. This personal safety education session teaches protective behaviours in a gentle, age-appropriate way.

Students learned three important safety messages:

  1. We all have the right to feel safe. Children are reminded that they deserve to feel safe in all situations.
  2. It’s okay to say “no” if you feel unsafe or unsure. Students are encouraged to be assertive and understand that they have control over their own bodies.
  3. Nothing is so yucky that you can’t tell someone about it. Children are encouraged to speak to a trusted adult if something makes them feel uncomfortable or worried.
