Year 10 - 12 Community
March 2026
Over the first couple of weeks, students have completed their Starting Right program focusing on our new Agreed Expected Behaviours Matrix and refreshing them on the importance of developing character at Year 10, and are now working through their first units of work for the year - including analysing The Giver in English, learning about indice and number theory in Maths, working on understanding how molecules are formed as part of a Chemistry unit in Science, and learning about World War II and the Holocaust in Humanities. Overall, the Year 10s have started their programs really strongly - with lots of energy, enthusiasm, and focus as they take their first step towards working out what their senior school journey will look like at NBC. I have already had many conversations with students who are demonstrating great character and are setting themselves up for a great year!
Student Reflection

The transition from Year 9 to Year 10 has been a lot less stressful than I expected. Last year was harder because we were getting used to a brand new campus, but this year I feel way more confident around the school. This year I’ve really enjoyed all of my classes - I’m focused on growing my learning as much as possible this year! Learning about the rise of fascism before World War 2 in Humanities has been really interesting and I’ve also been working hard to practice my analysing skills in English. I’m also a Year 10 student leader this year - as part of this, I’m a member of the SRC and also involved in a leadership development program to help understand our values. I’m looking forward to being involved with us and helping Year 10 and the whole school to be the best community possible! - Thomas DeFrancesco

It’s been a crazy start to the year! I had to miss some classes because I had to go on family holiday - but I’ve come back and I’m ready to learn! Coming back has been tricky at points - I’ve got a lot of stuff I need to catch up, but my teachers have been really supportive in getting me up to speed with the work I need to complete. So far my favourite classes have been my English and my Science classes. I enjoy English because my teacher is really great and I had him last year while he was still training to be a teacher - thanks Mr. Bakker! I’ve been enjoying Science because I get to work with my friends alot in this space. My teachers in this class will also go back through information if we don’t understand it. Overall, my goal is to get ready for VCE. I know it’s going to be challenging, and I’m worried I’m not ready currently - but I know I can use this year really well to help me prepare for it!

Scott Alldis
Year 10 Learning Community Leader
Welcome to the beginning of an important and exciting chapter of learning. VCE is a time of growth, challenge and opportunity, and how you begin truly matters. Equally important is collaboration. VCE is not a journey you take alone. Learning to work with and support one another, to share ideas, ask questions and learn together, is a powerful part of success at this level. One way students have demonstrated this is through our Homework Club program, support When You Need It. Homework Club runs three afternoons a week: Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30–4:30pm. This is a calm, structured space to complete work, ask questions and build consistency. A key change for 2026 is the introduction of themed weeks aligned to upcoming assessments. When a VCE class has a SAC scheduled, a subject expert will be present at Homework Club during the week leading up to that assessment, providing targeted support exactly when it matters most. We look forward to working closely with you and supporting you every step of the way. Let’s make 2026 a year of purpose, collaboration and achievement.

Year 12 Outdoor Education students recently completed the East West Walk at the You Yangs to prepare for their upcoming Great Ocean Walk camp in early March. This training hike supports their readiness for the coastal walk from Cape Otway to Aire River and visits to historical sites around Apollo Bay and the Otway region. Students demonstrated collaboration by working together, supporting one another, and showing a positive team approach throughout the walk.
Aston Hall
The first weeks of Year 12 have been busy but rewarding. Coming back as a senior, I feel more mature and aware of the responsibility that comes with this year. The workload has increased, but it feels achievable when I stay organised and focused. Teachers expect more independence, which I appreciate because it pushes me to take ownership of my learning. I’ve enjoyed settling into a routine, catching up with mates, and setting goals for the year ahead. While there’s some pressure with assessments and future plans, it hasn’t been overwhelming. Overall, these weeks have helped me feel motivated, confident, and ready to put in the effort required to make this year a successful.

Bailey Stokes Stewart
Over the past couple of weeks in Year 12, it feels like we have finally embarked on the end of our journey, as we only have one year left at this school. So far, getting to know all of the teachers has been a very enjoyable experience, and they have all been kind and helpful. They have been encouraging us, which has made the start of this year a very positive and reassuring experience. While I am aware that as the year goes on, the amount of work will only continue to pile on top of us, it has been lovely to have such a wonderful start to the year. Many students in Year 12 have already had to complete a SAC, and my class was one of the first to do so, as we had just completed our Legal Studies SAC. Our teaches have been absolutely dedicated and inspiring. they are always encouraging us to work to our full potential, theory care about our success. Their guidance, preparation, and faith in us made us feel confident and ready to give 100%
Mohammad Hussieni
What a proud moment for our campus to see Mohammed featured in the Geelong Advertiser, sharing a snippet of his Welcome Back speech alongside other school captains from across the region. To be represented in this way speaks volumes about the calibre of leadership within our college. Mohammed’s words powerfully reflected the strong culture of collaboration we have built. staff and students working side by side, lifting one another, and striving for excellence together. He captured so well the spirit of partnership that defines our school.

Jessie Melnik
VCE Learning Community Leader
VM/VPC crew has been absolutely lifting lately, and it shows.Uniform standards have improved massively, making this one of the strongest VM/VPC cohorts we’ve ever seen. Students are taking real pride in how they show up each day, and it’s awesome to see. Students have also been sharing their voices about our VM/VPC space. Through our student leaders, plenty of great ideas have come through about how to make the area feel more welcoming, cosy, and bright, a space that actually feels like ours. Thanks to everyone who’s been contributing ideas, effort, and good energy. This is your community, and it’s shaping up to be something we can all be proud of.
Growth - Athletics Day

Year 7 - 12 Athletics Day, and had the highest attendance ever with Irwin house missing just one person (who was unwell!). What was even more impressive was the creative costumes our students came up with, sporting their house colours with pride.
Kindness - Open Night

This term we had our Goldsworthy Open Night, where community members were invited to our campus for a tour of our facilities. We had 10 of our amazing Year 11/12 VM/VPC students volunteered their time after school to help out at the event. Are zoo Jamali, Tarkan King, Mia Ahearn and Joanna Brilli kept the cafe customers happy with coffee, hot chocolates and baked goods. Yousif Muyad and Muyad Muyad cooked up a storm on the BBQ, and Anthony Butterwoth, Gay Nay Soe, Naomi Mckernan and Nash Lucas led tours around our campus with a big smile!
Persistence - White Card Training

OurYear 11 VM/VPC students showed fantastic persistence while completing their White Card training during a full-day session. It was a long and focused day, but students stayed committed and worked hard to successfully finish the course. A White Card is an important qualification that students need if they want to work on construction sites anywhere in Australia. It teaches them how to stay safe at work, recognise hazards, and understand the irresponsibilities on a job site.
Collaboration - Harmony Day Proposal

Our EAL VM/VPC students showed fantastic teamwork by creating and presenting a Harmony Day proposal to our Campus Principal. They clearly explained their ideas for a full day of cultural activities, and their strong communication skills helped get their plan approved. They are now excited to move into the next stage of organising this special whole-campus event.
Year 11 VM Project
Students in our VM Project class have been working collaboratively to plan and deliver a cohort sustainability project focused on repurposing fabrics to create tote bags. As a group, students have taken ownership of the process — from generating ideas and organising materials, to designing and constructing their bags. Through this project, students are developing practical skills while also exploring the importance of sustainability and reducing waste. As the project progresses, students will continue to build their skillset by learning different techniques to customise their totebags, including adding designs and personal touches. This ensures each bag is unique and reflects their creativity and individuality. This project highlights the VM approach to hands-onlearning, teamwork, and applying real-world skills in a meaningful and purposeful way.
Student Reflection

Since starting VM, I’ve found it much easier to adapt to the work compared to previous years. The teachers are really supportive and take the time to personally help you and guide you through each step, especially if you fall behind. The classroom environment alsofeels more suited to my learning style, which makes it easier to stayon track. One of my favourite programs so far has been completing my White Card, as it’s a really useful qualification that I can use in future jobs. My favourite class is Numeracy, because the teacher makes the class engaging and supportive, which helps me feel more confident in my learning. - Aleica
VM has encouraged me to put in more effort, as I know it’s important for my future and connects directly to my career goals. In Year 10, it was easier to coast along, but now I feel more motivated to try harder, especially because of my VET course and the pathways it canlead to. I’m currently studying Childcare as my VET, and I really enjoy it. It has helped me realise that I’d like to work towards a career in midwifery or becoming an ultrasound technician in the future. - Lily
