Amazing 5/6

From the Teachers

Term 3 continues to be full of busyness and excitement. There is plenty happening across the school, with students eagerly looking forward to a number of special events throughout the term.

Week 7: Market Day, Basketball Day, Book Week dress up.  Week 8: House Athletics, Fathers’ Day Stall. Week 9: CAMP!

Our Year 6 students have also begun early discussions and preparations for their upcoming graduation. It is an exciting time as they start to reflect on their primary school journey. If you are a parent of a Year 6 student, we ask that you start sending across photos of your child throughout their primary school years to their classroom teacher, to help us begin to prepare for the big night!

Learning Focuses

Literacy

This week, the Year 5/6 students have been putting the finishing touches on their poetry writing. Throughout the unit, students have explored a range of poetic techniques and have worked towards creating a final poem inspired by a person of their choice. We have been impressed by the creativity and thoughtfulness students have demonstrated as they have used descriptive language and poetic devices to capture the personality, qualities and experiences of their chosen person. We look forward to soon celebrating their completed poems and moving onto our next unit, persuasive writing!

Mathematics

In Year 5, students have begun exploring decimals and developing their understanding of place value. They have had a particular focus on rounding decimals to the nearest whole number, tenth and hundredth. Students have been building their confidence in identifying the relevant place value and using the digit that follows to determine whether a number should be rounded up or down.

In Year 6, students have recently completed their unit on measurement, developing their skills in measuring and comparing lengths using appropriate units. They have worked with different metric measurements and applied their understanding to a range of real-world problems. Year 6 students have now begun exploring decimals, building on their knowledge of place value.

Inquiry

In Inquiry, our students have been hard at work preparing their market stalls for our upcoming Market Day on Monday 24 August. Working collaboratively in groups, students have been creating products and preparing for the exciting day ahead. It will be a fantastic day filled with a wonderful range of treats, drinks, games, fidgets, jewellery, books and collectables for the whole school to purchase and enjoy. Please continue to check Compass regularly, as this is where we will share important information and updates regarding the Market Day.

Market Stall Donations: To help make the day a success, we are still seeking donations of a few items for our market stalls. We would greatly appreciate any donations of books, lemons, Ooshies, or trading cards (Pokémon, football, basketball or other collectible cards). If you are able to contribute, please send your donation to school with your child and have them give it to their classroom teacher. Thank you for your ongoing support of our Market Stall Day!
