We're going wacky for Wakakirri!

Wakakirri is a national Australian schools storytelling festival that combines dance, drama, music and visual arts. Schools create and perform an original “Story-Dance” that communicates a meaningful message, theme or idea through performance.

The name “Wakakirri” is inspired by an Aboriginal phrase meaning “to dance” or “to tell a story through dance.”

Schools perform at regional live events held in theatres across Australia, where performances are professionally staged with lighting and sound. Many schools use Wakakirri as a way to build confidence, creativity and community spirit among students.

Our Performing Arts students have been hard at work beginning choreography rehearsals for this year’s Wakakirri Story Dance performance, A Night at the Museum.

This year’s story follows a group of school children and their teachers on an excursion to the museum. Along the way, a small group of students becomes separated from the rest of their class and, while trying to find their way back, they discover that some of the museum’s exhibits are not quite as ordinary as they first seemed! Magical statues and famous artworks suddenly spring to life, leading to a spectacular adventure filled with music, movement and dance.

Students are already having a fantastic time bringing these characters to life through choreography and dramatic performance. Our soundtrack features exciting reimagined musical tracks including Coldplay’s Viva La Vida and Eiffel 65’s I’m Blue, along with selections from the original movie soundtrack to help create the magical atmosphere of the museum after dark.

It has been wonderful to see students showing such enthusiasm, creativity and teamwork during rehearsals. We cannot wait to continue developing the performance and share this exciting story with our school community later in the year!
