Year 2 Imaginative Creatures
This week, the Year 2 students had a fantastic time unleashing their creativity as they described their very own creatures using various adjectives. They carefully chose adjectives to desrcibe thier unique creatures. Through this activity, students explored how adjectives add detail and bring writing to life. It was wonderful to see their confidence grow as they experimented with language and shared their creative masterpieces with the group!
Over the past few weeks, students have been busy developing their skills in both Literacy and Numeracy through a range of engaging and hands-on learning experiences.
In Mathematics, our Year 2 students explored number patterns and sequences. There was plenty of excitement in the classroom as students worked collaboratively to identify patterns — and they felt very cheeky getting to write directly on the tables during some of our activities! (Sorry Mrs Rouda!!)
Our Year 3 students put their money skills to the test by participating in a pretend school market day. With a budget of $50 to spend, students carefully considered prices, made purchasing decisions and calculated their spending while exploring real-world financial concepts in a fun and interactive way.
Meanwhile, our Year 4 and 5 students became “Millionaires” for the day! Students were challenged to think about how they would spend one million dollars. It was incredibly heartwarming and humbling to hear that many students would choose to donate some of their money to charities and people in need before spending it on themselves. Their kindness and generosity made us very proud.
In Literacy, students have been learning about plurals, prefixes, base words and suffixes. Through games, matching activities and word-building challenges, students explored how words can change meaning and form. We had so much fun experimenting with language and we may have even invented a few new, silly words along the way!
It has been wonderful to see students learning with such enthusiasm, creativity and curiosity across all year levels.
The air is buzzing with excitement and anticipation in the High Abilities area this week! We are thrilled to be able to provide a larger number of students across Years 2-6 with more opportunities for extension by entering double the number of teams into the APSMO competition this year!
Students from Years 3-6 have been working with Mrs Watson and collaboratively with their peers to increase and develop their creativity, knowledge and flexibility in problem solving and mathematical reasoning. This week the students completed their first of four tests in the program and all students approached their session with positivity and enthusiasm!
In addition to our Maths groups, this term, select Year 3&4 students are participating in a new Design and Creativity Unit. In this unit, students will be doing the following:
1. Identifying the features of playground equipment that designers include to meet community needs (safety, accessibility, enjoyment)
2. Testing and comparing materials to identify which materials are best suited for playground equipment
3. Drawing and annotating their own playground design that shows materials, forces, accessibility and safety features
4. Refining designs to develop a construction plan that aligns with the design criteria
5. Following a construction plan to safely build a prototype and evaluate how well it addresses the design criteria
This week students began their research by surveying and documenting the materials, features, durability, structures and accessibility of the junior and senior GRPS playground areas. Watch this space to see how the student’s playground designs progress towards the end of the term!
