VHAP Masterclass at Brentwood Secondary College

On Wednesday 29th October, our Year 7 & 8 Victorian High Achievers Program (VHAP) students attended a Masterclass at Brentwood Secondary College, joining students from South Oakleigh and Mount Waverley Secondary Colleges.

The day centred on open-ended, exploratory learning with students participating in either Maths or English streams and collaborating with peers from the other schools.

In the English stream, students explored the concept of dystopia - examining its key characteristics, discussing examples of dystopian texts and using visual prompts to generate their own creative ideas for stories set in such worlds.

Maths students took part in three engaging activities.

  • a Maths Escape Room, where teams had to solve 8 challenging maths puzzles to ‘escape’

  • a series of maths games and challenges run by Year 10 students from Brentwood;

  • a tallest tower building competition, won by a team that included 3 Highvale students (pictured) and one Mount Waverley student. Not only did these students win, but their tower was nearly twice as tall as the next tallest!

The day concluded with students reflecting on what they’d learnt through the various sessions. Well done to all students involved on their active participation in all activities and for demonstrating Highvale values so well throughout the day.
