Sustainability Conference
On Wednesday, the 12th of November, a group of SRC Representatives from Highvale and many other local schools attended a waste conference at Wellington Secondary College. Some of the schools that attended were Wantirna College, Brentwood Secondary College, Wheelers Hill Secondary College and Wellington Secondary College.
We listened to representatives from Bio Grow and the Monash council about the measures they take to recycle food waste and FOGO (Food Organics and Garden Organics). Bio Grow takes the FOGO waste and turns it into Garden Mulch. The representative from the Monash City Council talked to us about different waste options, such as the Bokashi bin, which works the same as a compost but for apartments where you don’t have much space to store a compost bin.
We also competed in a debating competition about different food waste issues. Towards the end of the day, the senior students (Year 10,11,12) went and talked to the shop owners across the road from Wellington College about how they manage their Food waste effectively. While the junior students (Years 7, 8 and 9) stayed at the school, we made a plate of food with different art materials.
To finish off the day, we had a tour around Wellington College to see what environmental measures the school takes, such as a food garden for their food tech classes, a compost for food and garden scraps, and multiple bin options for recycling, rubbish and FOGO waste. Overall, the day was fun and interesting about how to properly recycle your food waste.
