Year 5/6

Welcome to our Year 5/6 parents and guardians. This year promises to be an amazing one for our senior students and they have already impressed us with their attitude and positive start to 2025. Our senior students will have many opportunities to engage in activities and programs to support their learning this year.
English
Our focus for the start of the year will focus on close reading a variety of different text types. We aim to to build our student's ability to identify the main ideas and purpose of a text, unpack complex and unknown vocabulary and why the author used certain language and to use these as mentor texts for their own writing. We engage in daily close and fluency reads to build our reading skills and comprehension. Our students will being a narrative unit of writing in the coming weeks.
Maths
We are starting out the year by looking at place value and decimals. Students will build their number sense and foundational mathematical skills and be exposed to a number of worded problems to unpack as they search for relevant information and build their ability to solve more complex problems.
Humanities
This term in Humanities we are focussing on the topic of Geography. We will look at Australia and its closest neighbours in the Asia-Pacific region. Students will compare climate, economies and trade in the coming weeks.
Events and Activities
This year has started with a flurry of activity with our Year 5/6 students already involved in a number of activities, incursions and programs. Our Year 6 students took part in the PLAY Leadership incursion, which build their ability to work as a team. The skills developed will be used to run activities for our younger students.
We have started out elective units, where students elect to participate in cooking, gardening, coding, health and fitness or art. These will run weekly and students will get the opportunity to pursue different interests and subjects as the year progresses.
The Geelong Football Club came out to run a footy clinic with out students in Year 5/6. Continuing on with the sporting theme, we had 4 of our students (Sully, Pat, Georgia and Hudson) proudly represent our school at Interschool Tennis. Well done!
Thanks very much for a very positive start to the year from the 5/6 team
