Year 1/2

Welcome!
The 1/2 team would like to say a big welcome to all of the new families joining us for 2025! We have had an amazing start to the term so far. We have all had a large focus on building relationships with our new students, and ensuring they are feeling comfortable in their new learning spaces. We can't wait to continue getting to know your child and families.
Learning to learn:
For the first 2 weeks of school students focused on a 'learning to learn' program. During this we focused on transitions around the school, how to be respectful in the classroom to teachers and peers, and how to be organised for our learning.
During this time we focussed on developing relationships with our students and supported students to build relationships with their new peers. We are very happy with the amazing progress students are showing, as many have settled in to their new classroom seamlessly. This program also had a focus on wellbeing, where learn our mindfulness routines after recess and lunch, and some regulation strategies.
Literacy:
The 1/2 students have been learning about the routines and structure of our literacy block for 2025. This will include a combination of phonics instruction, fluency routines, hand-writing, reading and writing. Students have been learning how to transition in to these sections and how we complete each one.
Some focusses in literacy so far have been how to structure sentences, the process of the writing cycle, looking at comprehension strategies and fluency strategies when reading.
Sounds Write
We are well into the swing of Sounds Write, they have practised the routine, as well as our letter formation and spelling. Every two weeks students will be introduced to a new sound/ spellings. This week the focus has been;
Grade 1s - the /ae/ sound with spellings; ea, ay, ai and a_e
Grade 2s - the /air/ sound with spellings; air, ear, ere, eir and are
Maths:
In Maths, we are working on our counting unit. This involves skip counting, counting from different starting points and ordering numbers. Students are also undergoing a 'space' unit, where we are exploring different shapes and their features.
Students have also had a go at using the CUBE strategy, where they unpack worded questions to solve them.
Some activities:
Reminders:
- Students have been sent home with their reading journal and a note with information. Please note that we are completing reading testing and will be distributing reading materials over the next few weeks. In the mean time, please encourage your child to do any reading at home, adding to their reading journals as they go.
- Please remember to pack your child a water bottle during these hot days.
Regards, the 1/2 team.
