Tract - to pull

or - one who does or makes

Tractor is of Latin origin, from trahere, meaning ‘to pull or draw’ – draw in the sense of drag along.

Tractor was first used as the name of a device used by ‘quack’ or fraudulent/fake doctors. This device was two metal rods that could just touch a person to cure them!

"tract" is our Root word for our second week of our new morphology program - word origins. Students are enjoying the new concept and learning about Latin and Anglo-Saxon words from 1000s of years of history! 

Integrated Studies

This is me!

Throughout this unit, students will explore their identity and the characteristics that make them who they are. Students will consider the influence that the media, role models, and pressure from others has on their identity. 

Students will learn about the changes associated with puberty and investigate different ways to stay healthy in mind and body. They will create an identity self-portrait to celebrate who they are and share these with visitors at an Art Exhibition.

Last term, students democratically selected an issue, then worked collaboratively to raise awareness of this issue. 

Our issue chosen was NDIS Awareness - People taking advantage of the NDIS program.

Literacy

Us Mob - Walawurru!

Central Australia, 1960s ... Ruby lives on a cattle station and goes to the ‘silver bullet' school where she comes across Mr Duncan, her well-meaning teacher. Follow Ruby as she seeks to understand why two cultures are at odds with each other. The more Ruby learns, the harder the journey becomes as she is drawn back to country to uncover the secrets of her past.

We are one-third through our novel Us Mob Walawurru. Ruby is travelling to Tulu to play a week of sport! Along the way she learns about her culture and learning about how 'whitefellas' and the indigenous have co-existed. 

We are preparing to write a Historical Recount based on this text. 

Numeracy

BIG IDEA STATEMENT: 

PROPERTIES: For a given set of numbers there are relationships that are always true, and these are the rules that govern arithmetic and algebra. 

Big Idea 6 introduces our main multiplication set of learning. Students purpose is to learn how to multiply 3 by 1-digit numbers and 2 or 3 by 2-digit numbers. This is one of the most complex, but rewards parts of our curriculum with students. If you would like something to do with your child at home, feel free to throw them some equations!

This is also heavily Algebra focus, based on our fact families with multiplication and division. Our extension groups are working at a Year 7 and 8 level! Learning about dividing exponential expressions and finding the expression in its exponent form. 

Fluency

Students are learning their quick recall of Division of 4s. We are attempting many ways for our students to be quicker with our recall of all operations. These help lessen the cognitive load when solving our main tasks in numeracy. Feel free to ask us for resources to help improve you students' fast facts!
