Welcome to Term 3!
Word Origins: Last week we started our new program, Word Origins. Grade 3 students have enjoyed learning about some of the history of the english language, and learning about different morphemes. We have discovered where some words have stemmed from and made connections between various words.

Mentor Text: We have introduced our new mentor text, Are we There Yet? By Alison Lester. The story is based on a true story of a road trip Alison went on with her family when she was eight years old. The family travelled around Australia visiting a range of different places from deserts to the Great Barrier Reef, and even to the snow in Mount Hotham. Students have begun brainstorming some ideas for a writing piece based on a trip or adventure of their own.
This term, we have continued on with building our fluency and speed when recalling number facts. Students have worked hard to consolidate their understanding of adding to make 10 and adding within 10. We will reassess our best times and see if we can beat our last scores. Next, we will move into subtracting from 10 and subtracting within 10.
We introduced Multiplication last week, which will be our focus for the next little while. Students have been learning about arrays, equal groups and repeated addition as strategies that we can use to solve multiplication problems.

Our new Integrated topic is, Our Island Home, which is a unit on geography. Last week we discussed the states and territories of Australia, as well as the capital cities. We also had a look at some other countries, and discussed some values, cultures and traditions. Google Earth took us all over the world and we were able to see how far those countries were from us here in Beaufort. Students will continue to learn about mapping and other geographical features over the term.
