Exploring Careers, Pathways and Future Opportunities

There has been a strong focus on career education and future pathways across the school this term, with students taking part in a range of activities designed to help them better understand themselves, explore career possibilities and make informed decisions about their future.

Year 9 Morrisby Profiling

Our Year 9 students recently participated in Morrisby profiling, an important part of our careers program. The Morrisby assessment provides students with an opportunity to explore their interests, aptitudes, personality preferences and potential career pathways. Rather than telling students what career they should pursue, the profiling process helps them develop a greater understanding of their strengths and areas of interest, providing a starting point for meaningful career conversations.

We were pleased to have Susan Monahu, Career Practitioner from the Australian Centre for Career Education, working with our students throughout this process. Susan supported students to understand their individual profiles and encouraged them to think broadly about how their strengths and interests might connect with future study and career opportunities.

The value of Morrisby profiling is greatest when it becomes part of an ongoing conversation. Students can use their results to explore possibilities, ask questions, research occupations and consider subjects and pathways that may suit them. It is not a prediction of future success, but rather a tool to support self-awareness and informed decision-making. Research and school experience indicate that structured career profiling can be particularly valuable when it is combined with individual guidance, reflection and opportunities to explore real-world pathways.

A special thank you to all of the parents and carers who have attended our Unpack Interviews. Your involvement in these conversations is an important part of supporting young people as they navigate their interests, strengths, subject choices and future aspirations.

Career development is most successful when students, families and the school work together. Your questions, encouragement and willingness to engage in these conversations help our young people feel supported and confident as they begin making decisions about their future.

Senior Students Explore Post-Secondary Options

Our senior cohort has also been actively exploring opportunities beyond secondary school through our Post-Secondary Study Options Excursion. Students had the opportunity to learn more about the range of pathways available after Year 12, including university, TAFE, vocational education and training, and other post-secondary options.

Experiences such as these are valuable because they allow students to move beyond simply hearing about future pathways and begin to visualise what life after school might look like. Exposure to different institutions, courses and study environments can help students ask more informed questions about prerequisites, course structures, career outcomes and the different pathways available to reach their goals.

Year 10 Course Counselling

For our Year 10 students, course counselling is an important next step in connecting their interests and career aspirations with their senior secondary studies. Students are being encouraged to consider their strengths, preferred learning areas and possible future pathways when making decisions about subjects and courses.

Importantly, students do not need to have their entire future mapped out at this stage. Course counselling is about helping students make informed choices while keeping future options open wherever possible. Through individual conversations and guidance, students can begin to understand how their subject selections may connect with further study, training and employment opportunities.

Looking Ahead

Career education is not a one-off event—it is an ongoing process of self-discovery, exploration and decision-making. From Morrisby profiling in Year 9, to course counselling in Year 10 and post-secondary pathway exploration in the senior years, we are committed to providing students with the knowledge, experiences and support they need to make confident decisions about their futures.
