Chess Club

On Thursday 9th October, Vermont Secondary College was represented by four talented and enthusiastic Chess players held at Xavier College. At their first major tournament, they were unperturbed as they faced against a field of 446 competitors across 71 schools.

Congratulations to all our competitors who put up some fantastic individual performances which combined into a team result of 37th. For our first ever tournament, we can only be impressed with how they went.

Johar K of 7M2 put up a fantastic individual performance and scored 6.5 points which earned him 7th in his age group and 34th overall. He was only half a point away from snagging the bronze. Better luck next year!

Chern Jun K of 7H1 and Aritha W of 7M1 walked away with an impressive 5 points while Emmanuel N of 102 ended the day with a commendable 2 points. The great sportsmanship and resilience against a very strong field can only be applauded.

Stockfish evaluates the position shown in the picture as completely even. However, Johar was able to convert this into a win with consistent pressure.
