From the Year 1 Classroom

Hi Grade 1 families!

Another fabulous week with so much excitement around our Take Home Readers being sent home and our Swimming Carnival Fun Day.

Take Home Readers- Please remember, students will take home TWO books for the WEEK. The idea of this is to re-read to build fluency and understanding of the text. You are also welcome to read library books and books from home to further expose your child to a variety of texts!

Children will return and swap on FRIDAYS. Please also bring Log Books for teachers to check.

Literacy-

We have been working very hard and revising our learning about phonemes (sounds) and how to sound out words and transfer that learning when we read and write. We have jumped straight into some learning about various digraphs such asll, ff, ss, zz, ck, sh and wh.We know digraphs are 2 letters that make 1 sound.

We have also focused on the tricky words, said, are, her, was, very, you, andwill continue to work on put, have, were for the rest of the week.

Over the past fortnight we have challenged ourselves to write ‘interesting’ sentences about ourselves and our family, using joining words and correct punctuation. We have enjoyed exploring picture story texts such as Josephine Wants to Dance to identify new and interesting vocabulary and name if it is a noun, verb or adjective. We will explore Edwina the Emu this week to continue this learning, which we are all excited for!

Maths-

Over the past fortnight we have explored interpreting and analysing data from picture graphs and we learnt to ask questions to gather information. We loved recording information about our favourite ice cream flavours, favourite colours, favourite pets, and many more. We learnt how to decide which answer was most popular and least popular. This week we have begun to explore counting forwards and backwards from 0-120! We will also learn how to represent 2 and 3 digit numbers using tens frames and other materials such as Base-10 blocks (hundreds, tens and ones blocks.)

Religion -

Our Religion unit, we Grow in God’s love has been a beautiful unit to start our year. We have enjoyed learning about how God loves us and that we are a community and we can show God's love by loving each other.

Inquiry- My Family & Belonging-

We have been learning about our unique and wonderful families. We know that families look different, but we all belong.

Important dates-

Opening School Mass- Tuesday 24th Feb- please wear full school uniform
