From the Year 5 Classroom

Pancake Tuesday

Our students enjoyed some yummy pancakes to celebrate ‘Pancake Tuesday’.

Pancake Tuesday, also known as Shrove Tuesday, marks the final day before Lent when Catholics traditionally prepare for the season of fasting and reflection. Families and schools enjoy pancakes on this day as a symbolic way of using up rich ingredients before Lent begins, on Ash Wednesday.

Reading Diaries

Thank you to our parents, guardians, grandparents and family members and their support for the student's home reading to start the school year. It’s been fantastic. The Year 5 students are encouraged to read at home for a minimum of 80 minutes per week. This is to be recorded in their school diary. Diaries are used at school throughout the week, so we ask that rather than taking diaries home, children recorded their reading each morning as part of their daily set up. Diaries will be checked by class teachers each Friday.

Specialist Classes

This year, Year 5 students will continue to participate in Specialist classes on Tuesday or Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Students may wear their PE uniform on Thursdays and Fridays.

Religion

In Religion, the children learnt about Catherine McAuley and why her story is important to us at Sacred Heart followed by some education regarding our Mercy tradition at Sacred Heart.

The students researched and found out about the origin of our school sport house team names and why these stories are important to us at Sacred Heart.

In the coming weeks, we will turn our attention to Lent and how Lent can transform our lives.

Literacy

Our Year 5 literacy block is in full swing. Each week, we focus on a daily review of previous learnings, essential literacy foundations, including grapheme-phoneme sounds, long and short vowels, spelling patterns, and vocabulary words of the day. Students refine their skills through dictation, sentence expansion, and both independent and paired fluency reading. Our class novel, War Horse by Michael Morpurgo, is sparking discussions and critical thinking. We also aim to give students authentic reading and writing experiences.

Maths

Our Year 5's, aims to reinforce key skills daily and build confidence in numeracy. Each session begins with some warmup activities and a daily review of previous learnings to strengthen understanding and retention. We have been exploring factors, multiples and data representation, including line graphs. This week and next, we will be revising and reinforcing addition and subtraction strategies.

Inquiry

After some ‘Winter Olympics’ focus, ‘Healthy Living’ will be the focus of our Inquiry unit in the coming weeks, including being safe online.

Student of the Week

Congratulations to our recent Student of the Week award winners.
