Year 5/6

Welcome to 2026

We are so very pleased to be your 5/6 teaching team this year and we have been thrilled by the way that our senior students have settled into their new classes and learning spaces in the first couple of weeks. As always, the senior school has lots happening and we have already had students out representing the school in Interschool Tennis. Well done to Louis, Stella, Ashlyn, Indi and Angus for their efforts. We have also hit the round running with our Year 6/Prep Buddy program where students have been brilliant in making their buddies feel welcome and supported as they start primary school.

English

Our English units to begin the year will be focussing on the class mentor text War Horse. During this term, students will read the novel and be given the opportunity to explore elements of vocab, author's purpose and themes within it. They will also be given the chance to draft and publish both a narrative piece of writing and a persuasive piece of writing prior to NAPLAN in Week 7 of Term 1.

Our daily literacy block also utilises spelling, grammar, handwriting and fluency reading to build skills and consolidate learning across all elements of literacy.

Maths

During our Learning to Learn program, students were shown a range of activities in number and non-number. We have now moved into our first unit on Place Value. In this unit of work, students are, working with numbers that extend beyond two decimal places. They are learning how to model decimals on a number line, compare and order decimal numbers, and explain their reasoning using mathematical language.

Students are also exploring positive and negative integers, placing them accurately on number lines and applying them to real life contexts such as temperature and financial situations. In addition, we are building number knowledge by investigating prime and composite numbers, helping students strengthen their understanding of factors and number properties.

Humanities

This term in Humanities, we’re learning about democracy through our Civics and Citizenship unit. Students are exploring what it means to be part of a community and how communities help us feel a sense of belonging, just like we do at Moriac Primary School. We’ve been sharing ideas, listening to different points of view, and starting to practise our debating skills by giving reasons for our opinions. We are also working on important learning habits like sticking with challenges and communicating our thoughts clearly.

We hope to see as many of our families attending the Meet the Teacher session on Thursday 19th Feb.

Sincerely, the Year 5/6 Team
