Year 3/4

WELCOME BACK

The 3/4 team is excited to welcome all our families to what we know will be a fantastic year. Our students have had a great start, taking part in two weeks of our Learning to Learn Program, where they:

  • Established classroom expectations, routines and procedures
  • Enjoyed ‘getting to know you’ activities
  • Explored the ‘Moriac Way’ Matrix and 'Stars' positive behaviour reward system

We’ve also focused on student wellbeing, practising mindfulness and working collaboratively with our new classmates.

LITERACY

This year, students will participate in a Literacy block that includes a spelling and fluency lesson, followed by a focused reading and writing session. Our goal is to strengthen students’ ability to identify main ideas, unpack unfamiliar vocabulary, and develop their comprehension skills.

This term, students will focus on narrative and persuasive writing, working through the full writing process: planning, drafting, editing, and publishing their narratives. In addition, we will be completing a picture story book or short text analysis by discussing connections, themes, characters, and key ideas.

MATHS

Students have been enjoying a range of collaborative maths games, including using dice and cards, and using hands-on materials to support their learning. Through these games, students have been developing their place value understanding and strengthening their problem-solving skills as well as their social interactions with new classmates.

This term, students will continue to build and consolidate their place value knowledge, as well as explore financial maths, using practical resources and engaging activities to deepen their understanding of money.  We will also be focusing on data and graphing towards the end of the term.

HUMANITIES

This term, students will explore what makes a community dynamic and how communities can change over time. They will learn about Australian community advocates and how they are recognised for their contributions. Students will explore creative ways to help people become healthier and active members of their communities. They will also examine some community health messages and think about how they impact the choices of different people.

WELLBEING

In Wellbeing, we are learning about emotional literacy, which means understanding our feelings and noticing how others might be feeling too. We will learn to name lots of different emotions, notice how our bodies can feel when we have those emotions, and look at body language to help us understand how someone else might be feeling. This helps us care for ourselves and be kind and respectful to others.

We will keep focusing on our Behaviour Matrix to teach students what the expectations are at school. This will help everyone at Moriac Primary School know what to do so we can all learn, play and be safe in a positive and respectful school environment.
