Future Council

On Wednesday morning this week, Whitehorse Council visited our school to show our year 8 and 9 excel students a documentary called “Future Council” and run a workshop about climate change and its impact in Whitehorse, encouraging our young people to come up with some solutions. We are very grateful for this opportunity. 

During this session, my class and another class were invited to watch and analyse a documentary about children who are passionate about reducing the amount of litter dropped by people each day. The documentary showed the different actions and initiatives the children took to help protect the environment and make a positive difference. After the documentary, we had the opportunity to reflect on how the choices and decisions we make can negatively impact the environment and contribute to the damage of our planet. Aleisha yr9

I thought that the future council movie was very intriguing. There seems to be a lot of companies around the world that are trying their hardest to help beat Groth (or climate change). It helps me see that "Groth" is a very big threat, and it makes me want to take action to help the environment more. Another thing that was so intriguing was learning how Banks, such as ING, also play a part in the environment. Tom yr8

The members from Whitehorse council were nice and friendly. The activities were good and engaging. The movie was ok My favourite activity was watching the movie. Edward yr 8 

The future council members were friendly, and the activities were engaging. The movie was great, but I got a bit bored towards the end. The activities they made us do weren't too hard but not too easy. The CEOs gave logical answers to the kids' arguments, and for most of the kids' interviews, I was on the CEO's side.  Mason yr 8

My thoughts on the future council were overall positive. I found the movie at the start quite informational but I would've like if we had a break somewhere between the movie that would be nice as my friends were getting quite restless near the end. The second part of the session was very fun as I got to work collaboratively with my friends. The staff were amazing and very easy to work with making it a very enjoyable experience. Josh R

I found the Future Council Movie very interesting; however I do not find the idea of such a council to be a good idea. I would not trust a bunch of teenagers with undeveloped brains who think they know a lot more than they actually do to run multi-billion-dollar companies.  For the presenters themselves, I believe  they did an excellent job and I found the collaborative activities very fun and interesting but forcing us to sit in those very uncomfortable seats for the entire duration of the movie without a break was not enjoyable and actually began to hurt after the first hour. The one thing I would change is the whole 'superpowers' thing, it felt a lot like an unnecessary confusing metaphor and seemed a lot like the kind of things we would talk about in prep, I would rather them just ask the question without having to use the metaphor of a superpower for a skill that is useful to help fight climate change.
