MUNA 2026 – Student Voice on the World Stage

This year, students from Mullauna Secondary College had the exciting opportunity to participate in the Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA), a debate and diplomacy simulation organised by the Rotary Club and held at Lyndale Secondary College on Saturday 15 August. MUNA gives secondary school students the opportunity to step into the role of delegates representing different countries, researching international issues, and then debating resolutions from the perspective of the country they have been assigned. All student teams were randomly assigned a country and our students proudly represented South Africa, going head-to-head with students from other schools representing countries from around the world.

In the lead-up to the competition, our students met weekly to prepare for the MUNA experience. These sessions gave them the opportunity to become familiar with the rules, procedures, and structure of the competition, while researching South Africa's perspectives on the issues they would be debating. As a team, they strategized and planned their approach and practised developing arguments and responding to different viewpoints, building their confidence, and understanding along the way.

Throughout the day, our students participated in debates and discussions on a range of important global issues, including migration and development, the first placement of weapons in outer space, and the ethical use of artificial intelligence in the future. Our representatives approached the competition with enthusiasm, confidence, and a willingness to engage with some genuinely complex issues. While Mullauna did not take home the overall first-place award, our students were recognised with the Peace Prize, which was a fantastic achievement and a wonderful reflection of the respectful, thoughtful and diplomatic way they conducted themselves throughout the competition. We are incredibly proud of their efforts, the way they represented our school on the day, and for embracing the opportunity to challenge themselves.
