"ADHD can affect attention, impulse control and activity levels. For some young people, this means restlessness and difficulty sitting still. For others, it can mean daydreaming, disorganisation or finding it hard to complete everyday tasks." - Dr Michael Carr-Gregg

ADHD is a different way that some brains work and experience the world. Children with ADHD can bring wonderful strengths such as creativity, curiosity, enthusiasm, energy, big ideas and the ability to think in unique ways. Sometimes, children with ADHD may need extra support with things like attention, organisation, managing emotions or impulses. Understanding how their brain works can help us create environments where they feel confident, capable and successful. Our latest SchoolTV resource explores ADHD, challenges some common misconceptions and shares helpful ways families and schools can support children to thrive.

ACER wellbeing survey

Students in Years 2–6 will complete the ACER Wellbeing Survey to help us better understand how our students are feeling about their wellbeing, relationships, sense of belonging and experiences at school. The data will help us identify areas of strength as well as areas where students may need additional support, allowing us to plan targeted wellbeing initiatives, programs and supports that respond to the needs of our students

and continue to strengthen wellbeing across St Mary’s.

Importance of Connection

Strong, supportive connections play an important role in a young person's mental health, wellbeing and development. Feeling connected to family, friends, school and community can provide children and adolescents with a sense of belonging, security and acceptance, helping them feel valued and supported as they grow.

As young people navigate friendships, increasing independence, social pressures and the digital world, maintaining meaningful connections can sometimes become more challenging. Positive relationships and a strong sense of belonging can help protect against loneliness and isolation, while building resilience, confidence and emotional wellbeing.

This edition of SchoolTV explores the importance of connection and offers practical strategies to help strengthen relationships, foster belonging and ensure young people feel supported, understood and connected.

A big thank you to all families who have completed the ORIMA Survey. The survey was sent to families earlier this week, with some families receiving access only today. We encourage everyone to take the time to complete it openly and honestly. Your feedback provides us with an authentic voice from our community and helps us understand what we are doing well, where we can continue to grow, and how we can further strengthen the positive wellbeing environment that we are so proud of at St Mary’s.

Across the school, we continue to strengthen the consistency of our Behaviour Response Flow Chart. Consistency is incredibly important in creating a safe, predictable and equitable environment for every child. Our focus is not simply on responding to behaviour, but on teaching and reteaching our expectations so that every student has the opportunity to understand what Care for Learning, Care for Self and Care for Others looks, sounds and feels like.

We believe that when adults respond to students in clear, calm, consistent and respectful ways, children are provided with the security and guidance they need to learn, grow and flourish. Just as we explicitly teach literacy and numeracy, we recognise that positive behaviours, emotional regulation and social skills also need to be explicitly taught, modelled, practised and reinforced. Our shared and consistent approach across the school ensures that expectations remain predictable for students, while individual needs can still be supported with care and understanding.
