Cultural Diversity in VM
Ms Emily Selar
This is my best friend, Ran!
Originally from Hokkaido, Japan, Ran moved to Melbourne to refine her English and pursue her dream of becoming both a Karate Sensei and a Japanese calligraphy tattoo artist which the hopes of sharing these parts of her culture with others,
I recently had the privilege of inviting Ran to lead a calligraphy workshop with our Year 12 VM Literacy class. It was incredibly heart-warming to watch our students engage with Ran's culture, learn to translate our college values into Japanese and practicing the art of calligraphy. Hearing them repeat phrases in her native language and make a genuine effort to communicate was beautiful.
Though Ran will eventually return to Japan, our friendship has bridged the distance between our two countries. For both of us, Japan and Australia now feel like home. By sharing our cultures, we haven't just shared skills, we've found a true sense of belonging.
