Humanities Learning Area
Ms Wilson
The Humanities learning area has had a strong start to the year, with students across all year levels engaging in a range of challenging and stimulating studies.
I am pleased to commence my role as Humanities Learning Area Leader this year. I would like to acknowledge and sincerely thank Murray Ravenhall, who has worked diligently in this role over the past two years. Murray’s leadership and dedication have made a significant contribution to the Humanities team, and I am grateful for the strong foundation he has established.
Throughout Term 1, students across all year levels have participated in a diverse range of Humanities subjects and learning experiences.
Year 7 students began the year studying Geography, focusing on Water in the World. This unit explores the factors influencing water availability, the various uses of water, and strategies for achieving sustainable water management.
Year 8 students commenced with History, examining Medieval Europe. They investigated changes within medieval societies, key developments of the period, and the causes and impacts of the Black Death.
Year 9 students studied History, focusing on the shaping of modern Australia from the 1750s to 1914.
Year 10 History students undertook an in-depth study of World War II, analysing wartime experiences and Australia’s involvement in the conflict.
Year 10 Business students developed their financial and economic literacy, gaining practical personal finance skills and an understanding of key economic and workplace principles to support informed financial decision-making.
Year 10 Rights and Responsibilities students were introduced to Australia’s legal system, with a particular focus on individual rights and the sources of these rights.
VCE students in Legal Studies, History, and Business Management have been working diligently through their course content and assessments for Unit 1 and 3.
This year, the Humanities Learning Area has introduced a new textbook for all Year 7–10 classes: Good Humanities (Year Level), 2nd Edition. Families are reminded to ensure students have the correct and up-to-date textbook.
We also have several upcoming excursions in Term 2. Year 7 Humanities students will visit Watsonia shops in Week 5 as part of their Liveability unit. In addition, Unit 3 and 4 Business Management students will attend an excursion to the Yakult factory in Week 6.
There is much to look forward to in Humanities learning throughout 2026.
