Literacy

Literacy from Prep to Year 6 - What have we been reading?
Prep
Since the beginning of Term 4, the Prep students have been doing lots of writing using the sounds they have been learning. After reading 'Wombat Stew' by Marcia K Vaughan, the students wrote about the different characters in the story and described them using adjectives. This week, students wrote about the beginning, middle and end of 'The Very Itch Bear' by Nick Bland.
Year 1/2
Our 1/2 students have been reading information texts about marine animals, learning many facts along the way. They chose animals to research about and have been writing their own non-fiction texts using subheading to organise their information.
Year 3
The Year 3 children have begun the term by focusing on rhyme and poetry. After learning about rhyming couplets, students worked to identify the pairs of rhyming words within different poems. Some of these poems came from Roald Dahl's 'Revolting Rhymes'.
Year 4
To accompany their Australian History Inquiry learning, the Year 4 students have been viewing episodes of 'My Place', based on the book by the same name written by Nadia Wheatley. Through this TV series, the children have had the opportunity to view what it might have been like for Aboriginal children before British settlement.
Year 5
The Year 5's have been learning about the persuasive writing structure of TEEL (Topic sentence, Explanantion, Evidence, Linking Sentence). After reading 'Give Bees a Chance' by Bethany Barton, the students identified the reasons why bees are important to our world. They then chose their own animal and justified why they might be actually neccessary despite being condsidered a pest.
Year 6
Our Year 6 students have begun an author study of Australian author, Gary Crew. They began by reading 'The Watertower' and then proceeded to read it's sequel, 'Beneath the Surface'. Gary Crew uses illustrations to tell as much of a story as his writing does. The children analysed the illustrations before reading the books, making predictions and forming questions of their own. While reading, they adjusted their predictions based on the clues given in the text and the pictures.
