Prep News

Welcome Back!
What a great start back into the final term of the year! We have been so impressed with how the students have transitioned back into the routine of school and have gotten straight back into their learning.
💐 Welcome Shalome
Last week we welcomed Shalome to the Prep team. Shalome has returned from maternity leave this term and is excited to be working as an enrichment teacher in the prep learning centre. We are very thrilled to have her as part of our team and know she will be a wonderful support for our students.
📚 Literacy
In Literacy, we started by reading the story Wombat Stew. We looked at sentence structure and practiced adding adjectives into sentences to describe a character from the story. This week, we read The Very Itchy Bear by Nick Bland and focused on writing sentences to retell the story about the events in the beginning, middle and end.
🔤 Phonics
Late last term we started learning about the suffix ‘s’ and ‘es’ making nouns or verbs into a plural. For example, run becomes runs or box becomes boxes. We then started looking at making CVCC and CCVC words.
It has been great to see that so much reading has been happening at home. Please continue to read regularly with your child and record this in your child’s take-home journal. We are looking forward to seeing some students reach 200 nights of reading very soon!
🔢 Mathematics
For Maths, we have been looking at grouping which is the beginning concept for multiplication. We have used a range of strategies to help support their understanding in this tricky concept using: counters, playdough, games, cutting and pasting and drawing circles around a collection to make them into equal groups.
✝️ Religion
In Religion, we began exploring what the word Advent means and how Advent is a time for us to prepare for Jesus’ arrival. We looked at the symbols of Advent and created some work that will later be displayed in each learning space as Advent begins.
🌍 Inquiry
For Inquiry, we started exploring Geography, with a focus on natural and man-made features. The students have learnt that natural features are objects that were naturally made (sun, animals, rivers etc) and that man-made features are made by humans (buildings, houses, roads etc). Everyone has done so well so far at being able to give examples for each.
👥 Buddies
In buddies, we finished off our special story book we have been creating with our buddies. We were able to read through our story and then share them with some of the other students in our class.
