Year 1/2 News

We hope you all had a wonderful break and enjoyed the holidays! The students have returned with a spring in their step, full of energy and enthusiasm as we begin the final school term of 2026. We’re looking forward to a fantastic term filled with learning, growth and exciting opportunities!

Also, don't forget about our Learning Showcase next Wednesday, hope to see you there!

Inquiry:

This term, students have been exploring different materials and how they are used to make everyday objects. We are learning to investigate materials made from wood, plastic and metal, and to understand their different properties and uses. Students are also developing their design skills by thinking about how everyday objects can be improved and made even better

Literacy:

Over the past two weeks, students have been exploring non-fiction texts and learning how to write information reports about a range of sea animals, including dolphins, sea turtles, sharks and crabs. They have practised finding key facts, organising information under subheadings and using technical vocabulary, descriptive noun groups and precise verbs to describe animals’ appearance, habitat, movement and special features.

Students are now using these skills to create their own information reports, developing their research, sentence-writing and ability to communicate facts clearly.

Maths:

Over the past two weeks, students have been exploring location and direction in Mathematics. They have been learning to describe the position of people and objects using words such as left, right, forwards, backwards, above and below. Through hands-on activities, obstacle courses and partner challenges, students have practised giving and following directions to reach different destinations.

Students have also been creating simple maps, using symbols and legends, and navigating grids and mazes. They have enjoyed using Bee-Bots to follow directional instructions and explore turns. These activities have helped develop their spatial awareness, problem-solving skills and confidence in describing locations and pathways.

Religion:

Over the past two weeks, students have been learning about Mary and her visit to Elizabeth, exploring the story from the Gospel of Luke. Through storytelling, artwork and class discussions, students reflected on the important moments in the story and explored key vocabulary such as blessed, grace and exclaimed.

Students also explored the Hail Mary prayer, learning about the meaning of its words and why they are important to our faith. They shared their thoughts through drawings, written reflections and their own prayers, developing a deeper understanding of Mary’s faith, kindness and trust in God. As part of our learning, students also celebrated the special people in their lives by creating flowers of appreciation, celebrating the love and care that surrounds them.

A big thank you to all the grandparents and special people who joined us for our Prayer and Morning in the Learning Spaces. It was a wonderful opportunity to come together as a community, share in prayer and celebrate the special connections between our students and their loved ones. Thank you for taking the time to be part of this special morning!
