Year 3/4 News

Year 3
In Year 3, we have had a good start to our final term for the year. We have been returning to our routines well and are getting into the swing of Term 3. Today we gave thanks for our wonderful Grandparents. We prayed together and spent time in the classrooms with these special loved ones.
Literacy
In literacy, we have been learning all about poetry. Our students have enjoyed learning about what makes a poem and how we can use a range of literary devices to write and understand poetry. We have explored a few of the many types of poems and poetic writers, and our students have enjoyed opportunities to practice reading and writing poetry.
Numeracy
In numeracy, we have been learning about data. Our students have been practising posing questions and then collecting, representing, interpreting, and presenting data. We have looked at categorical and numerical data and practised presenting data as frequency tables, pictographs, and column graphs. We will continue to practice using our developing knowledge of data as we move into exploring probability.
Inquiry
In inquiry, we have begun our final unit for the year, Civics and Citizenship, and we are looking forward to learning more about government, decision-making, and our rights and responsibilities. Our students have enjoyed beginning their learning and looking at the history of democracy, how our government works, and our involvement in the community.
Religion
In religion, we have been learning more about Mary, the Mother of Jesus. We have been looking at who she is and the impact of God on her life. Our students have enjoyed reading about the Annunciation of Mary and looking at how her faith impacted her life and choices.
Wellbeing
In wellbeing, we have been continuing to encourage positive values. Our students have been learning about the qualities that make a good friend. We have also been preparing for another Inform and Empower session. This time our students will learn more about online safety, and they can manage problems while online.
Year 4
It has been another busy and engaging couple of weeks in the classroom, with students exploring a range of topics across the curriculum. It has been wonderful to see students sharing their ideas, making connections and developing a deeper understanding of the world around them.
Literacy
In Literacy, students have been watching episodes from My Place, including Barangaroo and Bunda, which explore Aboriginal life before European settlement. Students have been practising their note-taking skills while watching the videos and using their notes to summarise key information. They have also been comparing different texts to make meaningful connections. One focus has been exploring hut building and shelter design, comparing the shelters featured in The Wild Robot and Storm Boy with traditional Aboriginal shelters. This has encouraged students to consider how different environments, available materials and ways of life influence the shelters people build.
Numeracy
In Mathematics, students began a unit on Measurement, focusing on mass and capacity. They explored how these measurements are used in everyday situations before moving on to Data. Students have been learning how to develop appropriate questions to investigate a given set of data and how the wording of a question can influence the information collected.
Inquiry
For Inquiry, students have been exploring different celebrations in Australia and across other cultures, discussing their significance and the ways people come together to celebrate important occasions. They have also begun learning about the First Fleet and its arrival in Australia, examining the significant and lasting impact European settlement had on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. As part of this learning, students enjoyed an excursion to the Immigration Museum, where they had the opportunity to explore stories of migration and develop a deeper understanding of Australia's diverse cultural history.
Religion
In Religion, students have been learning all about the Rosary, exploring its significance in the Catholic faith and identifying the different prayers and parts that make it up. This learning has helped students develop a greater understanding of how the Rosary is used as a form of prayer and reflection.
Wellbeing
In Wellbeing, students have continued participating in the Inform and Empower program, developing their understanding of online safety and responsible digital behaviour. They have also been exploring the qualities that make a good friend, discussing the importance of kindness, trust, honesty, respect and inclusion. Students have reflected on how these qualities can help build and maintain positive friendships within the classroom and wider school community.
