Books and brownies

Our second session for Books and Brownies was held on Wednesday in the Library. An enthusiastic group of Year 7’s & 8’s gathered to discuss the books they are reading over a hot chocolate and a brownie. There was also a game of book bingo where students chose a topic to talk about their reading e.g. Do you read multiple books at the same time?

Our next session will be in Term 3 on Wednesday 28 July. The sign-up sheet will be available in the library the week before.

The House Reading Challenge has had an incredible response this year with the introduction of the Beanstack Webapp. This enables students to record their reading, which in turn goes towards our community goal of 83,000 minutes read by the end of the Challenge on 21 August. We’re currently at 66,712 minutes with 7 weeks to go until the end of the challenge. There is still the opportunity to record your reading using the House Jars on display in the library and each week, the points go up using the Jars and Beanstack (with duplicates removed) to keep students up to date on which house is ahead.

The introduction of weekly winners has also been a great motivation for students to write book reviews and read their way through the challenges and awards available on Beanstack. It’s important to note there are ‘Reading Integrity’ settings to ensure students are reading and logging their true reading times. On completion of a book students must engage with ‘Benny the Bean’ chatbot to ensure students are being honest about the books they read.

If you’re in Year’s 7 – 9 and you haven’t logged in to Beanstack, it’s still not too late. You’ll find the link on Compass under favourites. Students use their Compass username and password to login. If you’re unsure what to do, speak to Ms Mill or ask one of your friends to help you.
