Wonderful 1

One-derful Class Chronicles

Term 2 Week 2 2026 -  Friday 1st May

What have we been up to?

We have had a wonderful start to Term 2 and have settled back into our learning routines really well. We would also like to warmly welcome Mrs Suttie, who has been getting to know all the students and has been a wonderful addition to our Year 1 team.

In Reading and Writing, we have begun exploring information reports. Students are learning how to organise facts, use topic-specific vocabulary, and present information clearly for a reader.

In Maths, we are continuing to build our understanding of place value and number bonds. Students are working with tens and ones, and using hands-on strategies to strengthen their number knowledge.

We also had a very successful Leadership Morning, where students learnt about Habit 3: Put First Things First. We focused on prioritising the “big rocks” in our week, making sure we complete important tasks before moving on to other activities.

A friendly reminder to please send through a family photo for our Family Wall if you haven’t already. Thank you!

If you ever need anything please do not hesitate to get in touch with me at madeleine.simos@education.vic.gov.au

Reading & WritingWe will continue exploring non-fiction information reports and begin creating our own. Students will use the structures and language features we have learnt to organise facts clearly for the reader. They will focus on including headings, topic-specific vocabulary, and grouping information into sections. Students will also practise adding interesting facts and details to make their reports engaging and informative.

Maths

Over the next fortnight, we will be finishing our place value unit and beginning our learning in measurement. Students will continue to practise ordering, comparing, and representing numbers as they consolidate their understanding of tens and ones. We will then explore mass, capacity, and length through hands-on activities. Students will learn to order and compare objects using informal units and describe their thinking using mathematical language.

Science

In Science, we will be beginning a unit on materials and chemical reactions. Students will explore different materials and investigate how they can change when mixed, heated, or combined. Through a variety of hands-on experiments, students will observe and record different reactions. They will share their findings using drawings, simple explanations, and scientific language.
