Solli Raphael, award winning poet and author, performed his poems and shared his ideas for writing with Pakenham Secondary College students in two inspiring and entertaining sessions on the 8th of June.  The first session was aimed at Year 9 students who have been studying Poetry this term. The second session focussed on helping students in the Year 12 VCE VM class and Year 7 and 8 Enhancement classes how to develop a poetic voice. The performance was part of the English and Library Author Visit Program which aims to give PSC students the opportunity to participate in different cultural experiences.

The following are some student reflections:

Solli’s session was very entertaining and inspired me to say things in ways I wouldn’t have imagined. The session taught me to build confidence in what I believe, and then to write that in poetry!

... The way Solli writes and communicates the message he wants to convey is very interesting and he makes it obvious how passionate he is about whatever topic he discusses.   Solli told us the fundamentals of poetry writing and provided examples to assist us in our writing. He was kind as he gave us ideas and his presentation was very interactive.

…The poems were good and presented well. We wrote poems as well and two students shared their poems with the rest of the audience.

Solli Raphael’s session was interesting. It taught me a lot about poetry and Solli’s journey to becoming a writer.

I really enjoyed when he showed us pictures from the poetry slam where he won the competition. It was beneficial to my writing when he told us how to get through writer’s block.

I liked it when he rapped!
