Year 1/2
Literacy
What a busy three weeks we have had in Grade 1/2! We kicked things off with Book Week, celebrating this year’s theme, “A Symphony of Stories.” The students enjoyed our Book Week Parade, with children from our local kindergartens joining us by dressing up and participating in the fun. We also searched high and low during our Where’s Wally hunt around the school, explored the wonderful classroom door displays and participated in activities based on the 2026 Book Week picture books.
Over the past three weeks, our Literacy focus has been on non-fiction texts and summary writing. Students have been learning how to identify the most important information in a text, select key words and paraphrase information by putting it into their own words.
To support this learning, we have been using our very own Moriac PS Encyclopedia of Australian Native Animals, featuring some of our Grade 1/2 students handling the amazing native animals from our recent Wildlife X-Posure incursion! This has been a wonderful way for students to connect their real-life experiences with their reading and writing.
Students are now using these skills to research Australian animals and create their own non-fiction summaries, including information about an animal’s appearance, diet, habitat and other interesting facts. We have been very impressed with the way our young writers are learning to find the important information and explain it in their own words.
Maths
In Maths students have been focusing on division and measurement. Students have learnt about 'Dave the Divider', and what this symbol represents. Students have learnt about splitting items in to equal groups, what to do with remainders and how to write division number sentences. Students will continue developing their division skills by unpacking worded questions and drawing picture to help them solve.
Humanities
Students explored a range of materials and investigated how they could be changed and used for different purposes. Thanks to the families for bringing in recyclable materials for us to use.
Students also conducted an exciting bubble wand investigation. They made their own bubble wand using a pipe cleaner, tested wands and carefully observed the size and shape of the bubbles produced.
The Year 1/2 students are working collaboratively to plan and create an exhibit for our Humanities Open Classroom. They are designing their exhibits, considering the materials and following their plans during the construction process. Students are practising careful listening, sharing ideas and working cooperatively with their partners to create an exhibit that demonstrates a scientific concept. We are preparing for Our Humanities Open Classroom is on Wednesday 16th September, at 3pm.
RRRR
The Year 1/2 students are learning about identity, fairness and celebrating differences. They are identifying their personal interests, strengths and preferences while recognising that these may differ from those of their classmates. Students are also exploring why labels are useful for organising objects but are not helpful when applied to people. Through discussions and games, they are learning how rules help everyone participate fairly and how unfair behaviour can cause others to feel hurt or upset. These activities are helping students understand how appreciating one another’s strengths and interests allows us to work and play successfully together.
💛 R U OK? Day 💛
Yesterday we recognised R U OK? Day – a day that reminds us of the importance of checking in with the people around us and asking the simple question, “Are you OK?”
R U OK? Day encourages us to start conversations, listen to one another and remind our friends, family and community that they are never alone.
It was great to see our community bright and yellow as we came together to spread kindness, connection and support. 🌟
1/2 Stay late:
Next term, on November 12th, our Grade 1/2 students will be invited to attend the Grade 1/2 Stay Late.
We will share more information about the event closer to the date. In the meantime, we are seeking information regarding any dietary requirements.

We are planning to order pizza for students. The options will include ham and cheese, Margherita, and Hawaiian. We will also be providing popcorn.
