Ed in Faith

This week we went on a scavenger hunt around our school looking for clues (symbols) that our school is a Faith based school. The children found many items. I wonder how many you have seen when visiting our school? We also discussed what it means to be part of a Faith Community, in particular at SFX. The children have really enjoyed learning more about the history of Saint Francis Xavier this term. 

Literacy - Grade 1

Our Grade 1 students have been busy strengthening their early reading skills through a rich mix of phonics, fluency and hands‑on learning. Over the past few weeks, the children have been exploring long vowel patterns, including ee/ea and oa/ow, while also revisiting short vowel sounds and the ai/ay digraphs. This focused phonics work is helping students recognise spelling patterns, decode new words with confidence, and apply their knowledge across reading and writing tasks. 

Alongside phonics, students have been building fluency, accuracy and comprehension through engaging activities such as word sorts, sentence building, mini‑stories, reading games and partner practice. The children are enjoying the many hands on activities this term during literacy. 

In writing, we continue to explore the Grug books and the children have begun to write their very own stories about Grug.  

Maths - Grade 2

In Maths, our Grade 2 students have been developing strong foundations in early multiplication and division through practical, hands‑on exploration. Over recent weeks, the children have been learning how arrays, repeated addition, and repeated subtraction help us understand equal groups. They’ve enjoyed building arrays with counters, discovering how rows and columns represent number stories. This work has supported students in recognising patterns, solving simple multiplication and division problems.

In our next unit, we will be moving onto Shapes. Students will explore the features of different shapes and learn how to describe and sort them. This hands‑on work will give children plenty of opportunities to investigate, compare and create shapes in meaningful ways.

Inquiry

The 1/2's had a lot of fun designing their very own, perfect pet. They labelled the features of their pets and had to explain why their pet was the best. 

As part of our design thinking focus, the children have also been learning how to improve everyday objects using the BAR Key—Bigger, Add, Replace/Remove. They have applied this model to familiar items such as skateboards, scooters and rollerskates, considering how each could be redesigned to be safer, faster or more fun. 

Barry and Frank

Barry has had a lot of fun over the past two weekends. He spent some time with Chase's family, visiting his Uncle and trying out different musical instruments. At Aurelia's house Barry was treated to a burger dinner, a visit to the playground, learning the alphabet and relaxing in his little chair watching Aurelia in the car!

Frank had fun with Kai's family - watching her go swimming, playing lego and watching Michael Jackson music videos. He also spent some time with Luna visiting her cousin, playing roblox and cheering her on at soccer.

The children have really been enjoying the adventures of Barry and Frank and hearing their friends share of their adventures.
