Grade 1 Community News
Dear Grade 1 Families,
Welcome back to Term 3, where we have a lot of exciting learning opportunities taking place this term.
InitiaLit
Students have been learning about the split digraph ‘i_e’, ‘o_e’, ‘u_e’ and ‘e_e’ - or as we like to call it, “the bossy E”. We know that the “bossy E” helps make the vowel sound long.
InitiaLit - Tricky Words- work, baby, children
How you can support at home:
- Read for a few minutes each night and ask your child to spot words with our focus sounds
- Practise tricky words by writing them on paper, saying them aloud, or using them in a sentence.
- Find words using the “bossy E” rule, see if you can spot any words using any of the digraphs and trigraphs we have covered so far.
Storybook & Vocabulary
We are reading the text ‘Harry by the Sea’
‘Harry by the Sea’ is a story about a dog called Harry who goes on a day trip to the beach with his family. He is far too hot and is seeking shade from different places, but nobody seems to want to help him. Harry manages to cool down in the sea but comes out wrapped in seaweed. He is mistaken on the beach for a monster. His family realise he is missing and are happy to be reunited with him again. When they return to the beach on another day, the family have brought a larger sun umbrella so that Harry can enjoy some shade with his family. The story celebrates caring, thoughtfulness and sharing.
We have been focusing on the 3 vocabulary words: annoyed, grateful, shriek
Writing
In Writing, students have shared a recount, incorporated skills from our InitiaLit program and been focusing on using vocabulary words we have learned through Storybooks. We have been making adaptations to our Storybook, ‘Harry by the Sea’.
How you can support at home: You can support your child at home by encouraging them to write short stories or simple sentences using vocabulary words we have learned in the classroom as well as encouraging them to write “super sentences” with capital letters and full stops. Asking them to read over their work to see if it makes sense is a great skill, and something we continue to do in the classroom on a daily basis.
Maths
In Maths, students have been learning how to answer read, write and make 3-digit numbers. They have been using their understanding of hundreds, tens and ones to describe place value facts. They have also been using their understanding of hundreds, tens and ones to make sure we use a 0 as a place holder when writing 3-digit numbers.
We have also been looking at comparing the capacity of objects using informal units of measure.
How you can support at home: You can support your child at home by reading 3-digit numbers when at home and when out. You can support your child by also getting them to write or make numbers using multi-coloured pens, play-doh, pasta as a fun way for them to make the number.
Humanities
In Humanities, students are learning about water. They are exploring what a river is and different types of “bodies” of water. Students are learning where water comes from, the importance of water and what we use water for.
Respectful Relationships
Students are learning to think about different ways to solve problems and understand the positive and negative outcomes of their choices as part of Respectful Relationships.

- Please continue to read every night and ensure your child swaps their take home readers on their allocated day.
- Please check Compass for information on the upcoming Grade 1 Excursion (The Aquarium). Consent and payment is due by 18th August 2026.
