Hi Tarneit Rise families,
Welcome back to Term 3! I hope all of our students and families had a wonderful, relaxing holiday break and are ready for another exciting term of learning in Performing Arts. This term our focus shifts from music to drama, where students will explore acting, improvisation, storytelling, puppetry and character creation. Throughout the term, students will build confidence, develop creativity and work collaboratively as they learn to express ideas through performance.
Prep students will begin their drama journey by learning what drama and acting are, using movement, voice and imagination to share experiences from their school holidays. In Week 2, students will explore how facial expressions help communicate emotions while being introduced to Aboriginal storytelling through the Dreaming story of Bunjil and Waa, using drama to bring the characters and events to life.
Grade 1 students will be introduced to the exciting world of drama by learning about the elements of drama, including character, setting, conflict and space. They will perform a familiar fairy tale guided by teacher narration before beginning a new puppetry unit in Week 2, where they will discover different types of puppets, learn how they work and explore the important role of a puppeteer.
Grade 2 students will also begin by exploring the elements of drama and working together to perform a short class-created script. In Week 2, they will investigate a variety of puppets, learning how each type moves, the role of the puppeteer and comparing the features and uses of different puppets as they prepare for their own puppet performances later in the term.
Grade 3 students will begin the term developing their improvisation skills by learning the important theatre concepts of making and accepting offers to help create engaging scenes. In Week 2, the focus will shift to the drama element of character as students experiment with portraying different personalities and improvising interactions with classmates while remaining in role.
Grade 4 students will also commence with improvisation, strengthening their ability to build scenes by making and accepting offers. During Week 2, students will deepen their understanding of character by exploring character traits, physicality and voice before designing and performing as original characters they have created themselves.
Grade 5 students will begin exploring drama through acting and improvisation, developing confidence, communication and collaboration skills while participating in a range of performance games and short scenes. In Week 2, they will be introduced to filmmaking, with Performing Arts focusing on acting for the camera while Media Arts develops students' camera and filming techniques.
Grade 6 students will extend their drama skills through more sophisticated improvisation, refining their ability to sustain believable characters, build dramatic tension and respond thoughtfully to others in unscripted performances. In Week 2, students will begin exploring screen acting techniques, examining how acting for film differs from stage performance through subtle facial expression, body language, continuity, emotional authenticity and interpreting scripts for the camera, complementing the technical filming skills being developed in Media Arts.
We are looking forward to an exciting and creative term filled with storytelling, imagination and performance. We can't wait to see our students grow in confidence as they explore the many exciting aspects of drama throughout Term 3.
