Year 3 Newsletter – Welcome to Term 3
Welcome back to Term 3! We hope all of our Year 3 families enjoyed a restful and refreshing holiday break. We are excited to begin another busy and rewarding term filled with engaging learning experiences, new opportunities and continued growth for all students.
Earlier this week, students brought home their NAPLAN results. We would like to congratulate all of our Year 3 students on their efforts and achievements. Every student should be proud of the progress they have made, and we encourage families to celebrate their child's learning journey. We would also like to thank the many families who attended our Parent-Teacher Interview evening on Thursday 23 July. It was wonderful to meet with you, celebrate student successes and discuss goals for the remainder of the year.
This term also marks an exciting change to our Year 3 program, with students now participating in a specialised teaching model. Rather than one classroom teacher delivering all subjects, students now have specialist English and Mathematics teachers. It has been fantastic to see how positively students have adapted to this new structure.
They have embraced the change with maturity and enthusiasm, and we look forward to seeing the incredible progress they continue to make throughout the second half of the year.
English
This term, students are exploring the classic Australian novel Storm Boy by Colin Thiele. Set along the beautiful Coorong region in South Australia, the story follows the special friendship between a young boy and an orphaned pelican while exploring themes of family, belonging, responsibility and caring for the environment. As part of this unit, students are developing their reading comprehension through analysing characters, identifying themes and supporting their ideas with evidence from the text. Our writing focus this term is information reports, with students researching and writing detailed reports about the unique environment of the Coorong, including its wildlife, geography and cultural significance.
Mathematics
In Mathematics, students will continue learning through the Explicit Mathematics Program (EMP), which provides daily opportunities to review, practise and extend key mathematical concepts. This term, students will continue developing their understanding of multiplication and division, fractions, measurement and problem-solving strategies while building fluency through our Daily Reviews. Through explicit teaching, guided practice and regular revision, students will strengthen their mathematical reasoning and confidence as they work towards achieving their individual learning goals.
We are looking forward to another fantastic term of learning and growth in Year 3. Thank you for your continued support and partnership in your child's education. We can't wait to see all that our students achieve throughout Term 3!
