Grade 6 Community News

Dear Grade 6 Families,
We hope you had a relaxing and enjoyable holiday break! It has been wonderful to welcome all our Grade 6 students back to school for the start of Term 3. There is a great buzz of energy in the classroom, and we are already impressed with how quickly everyone has settled back into routines.
English
In English this term, students have begun studying the novel Black Cockatoo by Carl Merrison and Hakea Hustler.
Black Cockatoo is a powerful contemporary story that explores connection to Country, family relationships, responsibility, and identity through the experiences of a young First Nations girl, Mia.
By Week 2, students have engaged with Chapters 1–4, where Mia discovers an injured dirrarn (black cockatoo) and feels a deep connection to it after learning from her Jawiji (grandfather) that it is linked to her family totem. As the story unfolds, Mia faces difficult choices as she tries to care for the bird in secret, while also navigating challenges within her family relationships.
It has been a rich start to the unit, with thoughtful class discussions and strong engagement from students as they begin to unpack the deeper meaning within the text.
We look forward to continuing the journey through Mia’s story in the coming weeks.
Maths
This week, students will learn to order common fractions and justify their thinking by explaining the reasons for their choices. Next week, they will extend their understanding of fractions by adding and subtracting fractions with related denominators, applying efficient strategies to solve a variety of problems.
Humanities
This week, students will explore what daily life was like in Australia during the early 1900s, with a focus on how Federation and the development of the Constitution helped shape the nation. Next week, students will build on this learning by examining the changing experiences and perspectives of First Nations peoples throughout the 20th century, including the significant contributions of individuals and groups.
