Alumni Spotlight - Hermione (Josie) Walsh

Hermione (Josie) Walsh, a 2019 graduate of Lumen Christi College, is forging an exciting career in theatre as a playwright, director and actor. Guided by a deep love of storytelling and performance, Josie has followed a creative path that blends artistic curiosity with meaningful social themes. Her work continues to gain attention within Western Australia’s theatre community.

A Journey of Learning and Growth

After graduating from Lumen Christi College in 2019, Josie explored several university pathways before finding the right fit. She completed a semester of journalism and then studied secondary drama teaching at Edith Cowan University, where she discovered a love for drama education and formed lasting friendships. After professional placement, Josie realised her passion lay in creating theatre rather than teaching it.

Determined to pursue this calling, she enrolled in a Bachelor of Creative Arts majoring in Theatre Arts at Curtin University. The program exposed her to a wide range of disciplines, including acting, directing, design, stage management, and technical theatre. It also encouraged experimentation and original work, which became a defining part of Josie’s development as an artist.

Career Highlights

Josie’s standout achievement to date is Red Ticket, her writing and directorial debut. The gothic thriller was staged at The Blue Room Theatre in Northbridge last month. Now in its third stage of development, Red Ticket has already been studied by John Curtin College of the Arts as part of Year 12 Drama ATAR, alongside The Yellow Wallpaper. Inspired by the Fremantle Lunatic Asylum, the work explores post-natal depression and the history of psychiatric treatment with sensitivity and power.

Fond Memories of Lumen

Josie fondly recalls playing Grandmama in the Year 12 production of Roald Dahl’s The Witches. The joy of performing with friends on stage was a turning point, cementing her lifelong love of drama.

Words of Wisdom

“If you have a passion for something, just go for it. You’ll never know where it can lead. Don’t be afraid to reach out to people in the industry for advice, tips, and mentorships.”

From her early days on the Lumen stage to premiering original work in professional theatres, Josie’s journey reflects the power of passion, perseverance, and the creative spirit nurtured at Lumen Christi College.
