Visual Arts

In Visual Arts, students have been exploring the Element of Art – Form through a variety of creative, hands-on sculpture projects. Throughout this term, students will be developing their understanding of three-dimensional art while experimenting with different materials and learning a range of sculpting techniques.

Foundation

Foundation students explored air-dried clay, where they had the opportunity to experiment with the material by rolling, pinching, squeezing, pushing and pulling the clay into different shapes. They learnt important sculpture techniques including pinching, scoring and slipping, joining clay, and creating texture, before using these skills to create their own air-dried clay turtle.

Students were also introduced to the work of Peter Anton, an American artist famous for creating oversized sculptures of sweets and desserts. Inspired by his work, students began exploring papier-mâché, constructing an armature to create a decorative doughnut.

Year 1/2

Year 1/2 students explored air-dried clay by creating a wall-hanging letter plaque inspired by artist Cassie Stephens. Students experimented with texture, repetition, shape and colour while developing their sculpture skills through pinching, scoring and slipping, joining clay, and adding decorative details. Their finished artworks featured the first letter of their name in a colourful and creative design.

Students also learnt about Peter Anton and his larger-than-life dessert sculptures. They then created a papier-mâché ice cream cone with one or two scoops, constructing a strong armature before carefully applying layers of papier-mâché.

Year 3/4

Year 3/4 students created a colourful exotic bird sculpture inspired by Cassie Stephens. Using air-dried clay, students learnt and practised important sculpture techniques including pinching, scoring and slipping, joining clay, creating texture, and adding decorative details to create a whimsical three-dimensional bird full of personality.

Students also explored the artwork of Peter Anton before beginning a papier-mâché Paddle Pop/icy pole sculpture. They shaped a foam base and applied layers of papier-mâché to build a realistic icy pole.

Year 5/6

Year 5/6 students created a fun bobble head character sculpture inspired by Cassie Stephens. Working with air-dried clay, students refined their sculpture skills by using pinching, scoring and slipping, joining clay, creating texture, and adding decorative details to produce imaginative character sculptures.

Students were also inspired by the work of Peter Anton and explored sculpture using Modroc plaster. Beginning with a foam block, they carefully applied layers of Modroc to create a realistic slice of cake ready for painting and decorating.

A huge congratulations to Hazel Axford (Year 5) for winning the Kingston

Council Annual Bookmark Competition. This competition is open to all 

residents within the Kingston Council area, with only two winners selected

in each age group. Hazel's beautiful bookmark design has been professionally printed and is now available free at all Kingston Library branches, along with

the other winning entries. Hazel also received a $50 Cooke & Young 

Booksellers voucher. 

We are incredibly proud of Hazel's creativity, imagination and artistic talent. Congratulations on this wonderful achievement!

Crazy Camel Fundraising – Celebrate Your Child’s Creativity!

This year, Le Page Primary School is excited to be participating in the Crazy Camel Fundraising Program.

Students will have the opportunity to plan, design, and create their own unique artwork in Visual Arts. Once completed, families will be able to order a range of special keepsakes featuring their child's artwork. These personalised products make wonderful gifts and treasured memories that can be enjoyed for years to come.

Some students have already begun creating their artworks. However, due to the upcoming swimming program over the next two weeks, the majority of students will begin working on their fundraising artworks next term.

We are looking forward to celebrating our students' creativity and giving families the opportunity to turn their child's artwork into a special keepsake to treasure forever.

Due to the weather being so cold and wet on some days, all year levels have been inside the hall, keeping warm but very active participating in tabloid sports, either with a partner or in a group of 4.

The students love these mini games, that focus on fine and gross motor skills, hand eye coordination, movement and balance and teamwork. We even have some maths incorporated into these skills as students have to count their score and then add this up with their partners score. It has been great seeing the joy, excitement and enthusiasm of each student as they enter the hall to see the skills set up and then as they participate in each skill.

Skills have include target throwing activities, catching, passing and throwing, basketball and hockey dribbling, soccer kicking, ten pin bowling, roller boards, hitting, jumping and hopping. 

It has also been pleasing to see the teamwork, support and encouragement of all students with their partner as they work hard to earn the most points on each activity.

Interschool Sports – Mixed Netball and Girls Teeball (Division Finals)

Mixed Netball

On Tuesday 28th July, Mr Duckett and Mrs D took 10 students to Frankston to compete in the Mixed Netball Division Finals. The excitement was electric and the anticipation for a very successful day was high.

The team played 3 pool rounds with the winning team from two pools playing off in the final. The team won their first game, had a close loss in the second game and then won their third game so won two out of three. In the end it came down to percentage to see which team would advance to the finals, but unfortunately we finished second and didn’t quite get through. 

The students had a great day, lots of fun, team work, support, encouragement and sportsmanship. Congratulations to all the students that played. Eshie, Lyla, Olive, Viv, Alp, Altay, Sunny, Thomas, Rose K and Zoe, we are very proud of your efforts.

Girls Teeball

On Friday 31st July, Mr Bradley and Matilda took 11 girls to Kingston Heath Reserve to play in the Division finals.

We had high hopes and started off brilliantly, winning the first game 27 to 3 with all girls getting home for a run at least once throughout the game and our fielding and team work was superb.

This might have lead to a false sense of security as the second game was very close. However, after 5 innings the girls had a very close win, winning 5-0.

The last game we had a good win and as a result advanced through to the final, where the winning team would be crowned, but also would advance through to the regional finals.

It was a very close game, and after the fourth innings, we hit the front and were leading by 3 runs, 14 to 11. Unfortunately we didn’t quite field as well as we could and the other school scored 7 runs to take an 18-14 lead with our last innings at bat. It was extremely close and the girls tried but we only managed to score 2 runs and lost 18-16.

I was very proud of their efforts, teamwork, support encouragement, sportsmanship and game play.

We thought that was the end of our teeball games, but on Monday 3rd August we were offered a position in the next round – Regional finals as their was one position free. As a result we took up the offer and will now play in the regional finals on Tuesday 18th August. 

We will do a bit of practise before the day, and hope to turn the result around.

Music 

Preps:

This fortnight students in Prep have continued their learning about different families of instruments. In Week 3, students learned about electronic instruments such as the keytar and got to explore creating their own electronic sounds by using Chrome Music Lab. Through the free to use website, students were able to create short 4 bar patterns and listen back to them using headphones. In week 4, students continued their investigation into different families of instruments by exploring stringed instruments. They listened to examples of stringed instruments being played including the cello, violin and double base. Over the next 4 weeks students will be beginning to explore different styles of music including Classical, Jazz, Rock N Roll and many more. They will learn to sing songs in these styles starting with Classical music.

Year 1 & 2

Year 1 students have enjoyed developing their drama skills over the last fortnight and are excited to create their own scripts using their own characters and character qualities. Year 2 students concluded their unit of learning about drama over the last fortnight and have begun learning about Film making. Starting with the basics of what is a shot, students will explore the process of film making including storyboarding, filming, editing and audio recording. Keep an eye out for announcements regarding the commercials that the year 2 students will be working towards making this term.

Year 3 & 4

Students in years 3 and 4 have continued their learning about film making with a specific focus on editing using iMovie. Students have filmed short scenes and used their growing knowledge of editing tools to trim, cut and modify the speed clips to make short movies. They have also learned about storyboarding and created their 12 shot storyboards which they will be aiming to film and edit over the next two weeks.

Year 5 & 6

Students in Year 5 and 6 have been making the final adjustments to their commercials which they have filmed and edited over the last 3 - 4 weeks. They are excited to share what they have created and information will be communicated to families soon about when they will be displayed.
