Staying in the Present

by Fr Henri Nouwen

Many of the good and important things that have happened to me in life were completely unexpected. And many things that I thought would happen to me did not occur. As I reflect on this reality, it is clear that God is present in the events of my life, yet I act and speak as if I am in control. But if the future is not in my hands, then I have all the more reason to stay in the present and give honour and glory to God from where I am, trusting that God is the God of life who makes everything new. Who knows where you or I will be next year on this day! So why worry about it? God will surprise us.

Reflections on staying present through prayer.

To stay in the present through prayer, you can use the following prayers:

Embracing the Present: "Dear Lord, in the stillness of this moment, I seek Your presence. Help me center my thoughts and focus on the beauty of the present. May Your peace fill my heart, and may I be fully aware of Your love surrounding me."

Mindful Invocation: "Heavenly Father, guide my mind to be present in this moment. Help me appreciate the gift of now and embrace each second with gratitude."

Gratitude Prayer: "Lord, I am thankful for the present moment, a precious gift from You. Help me cultivate a heart of gratitude, recognizing Your blessings in the simple joys of today."

Finding Peace in the Present: "God of Peace, grant me serenity in the present chaos. In prayer, I surrender my anxieties and find solace in Your comforting embrace."

These prayers can help you cultivate mindfulness and focus on the present moment, allowing you to appreciate the beauty around you and find peace in the present.
