Level 2: Connect

Welcome back to Term 2! We hope all families had a relaxing and enjoyable break. It has been wonderful to see students return to school settled, enthusiastic and ready to learn. Over the first two weeks, students have been busy reconnecting with classroom routines and engaging in a range of exciting learning experiences across all areas of the curriculum. We are looking forward to a fantastic term ahead filled with growth, curiosity and continued learning.

English

Core Literacy

Students have been exploring different spelling patterns and word parts to support their reading and writing. They have been learning about the ‘ie’ and ‘ue’ sounds, recognising how these letter combinations can represent different sounds in words.

Students have also been introduced to prefixes such as inter- and trans-, learning how these word beginnings can change the meaning of a word (for example, inter meaning between and trans meaning across). In addition, they explored the suffixes ‘-er’ and ‘-est’ to compare things (e.g. taller, tallest).

Reading & Writing

Reading – Visual Literacy and Author Study

We completed our author study on Bob Graham and explored his books Queenie and the Bantam and Max. Students explored how images and text work together to create meaning. We discussed and compared the setting and the characters of the stories. As a fun end to our author study, the Year 2s chose their favourite Bob Graham story and completed a book review to celebrate their learning.

English – Grammar

Students have been learning about boundary punctuation and how it helps make writing clear and easy to read. They practised using capital letters, full stops, question marks and exclamation marks correctly at the beginning and end of sentences.

Students have also been developing their editing skills, learning how to reread their work carefully to check for spelling, punctuation and meaning. They are beginning to make improvements to their writing by adding missing punctuation and fixing sentences so they make sense.

In addition, students explored using “Before” and “After” as sentence starters to help organise their ideas and show the order of events. This has supported students in writing clearer and more structured sentences when describing what happens first and next.

Maths

This term in Mathematics, students will be learning about addition and subtraction. They will explore a range of strategies to help them solve problems and build confidence in choosing the method that works best for them.

We strongly encourage regular counting practice at home, whether it be by ones, tens or hundreds, as this supports number understanding and fluency.

In addition, students have begun our Number Fluency Program. Through this, they will work on targeted sets of skills aligned to their individual learning levels. As they progress through the program, students will continue to build fluency, accuracy, confidence and automaticity with key number skills.

Inquiry

We have begun our new unit, Geography of Australia. Students will be learning about why Australia is a special country, with many different places, people and cultures.

Through this unit, students will explore our land, our neighbouring countries, and the rich histories and perspectives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. This learning will help them understand how people live in different ways, and why it is important to care for our country and respect everyone who calls it home.
