Welcome Back Year 3's
In Literacy, students have been strengthening their reading and writing skills by using prior knowledge, making connections, and making predictions to better understand texts. While reading Dreaming Soldiers, students responded creatively by writing acrostic poems and postcards home from the perspective of a soldier, showing empathy and insight into life during wartime.
Students focused on Anzac Day, which is commemorated on 25 April. They learned that Anzac Day is a special day of remembrance for Australians and New Zealanders, honouring all those who have served and died in wars and conflicts. Students discovered that ANZAC stands for the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, and they explored how World War I was different for many Australians.
Grade 3 students have shown thoughtfulness, creativity, and growing historical understanding throughout the past fortnight.
We have also been learning about the Etymology of words which is the origin of how words were formed. The students have found this very interesting and fascinating as the majority of words were formed from Latin, French and Greek. We are also practising choral reading and Fluency Pairs which is oral reading and ensuring that the fluency improves with each oral reading session. At home, please make sure your child is reading out aloud at least once a week.
Additionally, students are now using dictionaries to look up the meaning of unfamiliar words and then writing these words in sentences to convey understanding. In Grammar, we are learning about the spelling rule 'i before e except after c' and of course the exceptions! During our Core Literacy time we are learning about the root word 'port' meaning 'to carry'. We are learning to add prefixes and suffixes to create different words. Eg: prefix trans (through, across) + root word port (to carry) = transport (to carry through, across).

We have been learning to apply our knowledge of Place Value to name, understand and write 6- and 7-digit numbers. Students practised reading large numbers, recognising the value of each digit, and writing numbers correctly using words and numerals.
We have also been learning to rename numbers in multiple ways. This helps students understand that numbers can be broken apart and represented differently. Renaming numbers supports flexible thinking and deeper understanding when solving maths problems.
In addition, we have been exploring multiplication and division. Students have learned different ways to represent multiplication and division sums, including:
These strategies help students show their thinking, choose efficient methods, and explain how they solved a problem.
Over the past fortnight, Grade 3 students have been learning about Earth’s natural resources as part of their Inquiry studies. They explored what natural resources are and how they can be classified as renewable or non‑renewable. Students began to develop an understanding of how natural resources and waste are used and managed, and they discussed different views on how this can be done sustainably to care for our environment.
