Year 5/6

We are already half we through the term and time is flying by! We have a jam-packed term full of events and this will continue over the back end of Term 3. 

English

We have are about to finish our class novel Once by Morris Gleitzman.  The book focuses on the historically fictional journey of Felix, a young Jewish orphan, who navigates his way surviving in WW2 Poland.  Our students have amazed us with the empathy, curiousity and responsibility during this text study that delves into complex and sensitive themes. They have also researched and created accompanying information reports on Poland, demonstrating their understanding of landmarks and landscapes, flora and fauna, people and culture and connection to Australia. 

Maths

In Maths we have been actively exploring measurement and time through a range of engaging, hands-on activities and real-life challenges. Students have investigated capacity, mass and length, developing their skills in measuring accurately, selecting appropriate units and converting between different units of measurement. There has been plenty of excitement as students worked in teams to tackle practical challenges, share strategies and put their problem-solving skills to the test! We have also been exploring time, with students building confidence in reading and converting between analogue, digital and 24-hour time and using these skills in everyday situations.

Humanities

Our Grade 5/6 students have been exploring The Process of Discovery, learning how scientists and engineers use curiosity, experimentation and persistence to understand the world around us.

So far, students have investigated light refraction, states of matter, and the scale of our Solar System through a range of hands-on activities. These experiences have encouraged students to make predictions, test their ideas and discover that science is often about asking questions and finding out what happens.

We are currently investigating gravity and air resistance, including an experiment to discover why different objects fall at different speeds. Next, students will put their engineering skills to the test by designing and building balloon-powered rockets, with the challenge of carrying as many paper clips as possible from "Earth" to "Mars"!

To finish off the unit, students will explore fascinating scientific discoveries and the people behind them before using Scratch to create an interactive presentation and quiz showcasing some of the facts they have discovered.

Events

Over the last few weeks we have had a few amazing events in Year 5/6.  We had our whole school Spelling Bee which was won by Penny and Bailey. Our netballers proudly represented our school at the Divisional Championships.  We had most of the cohort attend basketball to play against other schools at the District Basketball Championships.
